The smoke has finally cleared
leftover firecrackers still popping in the neighborhood
shells of celebration litter the morning pavement
Black Cats, bottle rockets, and the occasional Roman Candle

an old woman with a broom sweeping her stoop
weathergirl says temperature may hit 100
two children sell warm lemon drinks for 5 cents.

independent of any thought
I climb to the roof for a better view
only to see that not much has changed.
