Gastrointestinal limit is put to the max during every hot dog eating contest, being held in select cities throughout the US during June. Winners at the local competitions go on to compete in the July Fourth Nathans Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, being broadcasted worldwide on ESPN. Both first timers and hardcore eaters compete in the local events for their chance at competitive eating glory.

On Saturday, May 19, 11 contestants were on hand at the Nathans Famous Hot Dog in East Hartford, CT. At the event, the experience of competitive eater Tim 'Eater X' Janus' showed, as he was able to consume 41.5 hot dogs in the alloted 12 minutes, blowing away the competition. "He is so thin and eats so much," said one awed spectator.

The next closest competitor was Tim Brown with 24. Russ Keeler placed third with 23. In addition to winning a seat at the July Fourth Eating Contest, winers of the regional tournaments receive a trophy, a year's supply of Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and a DVD copy of "The Good Girl" starring Jennifer Aniston.

Rules state contestants are to eat as many hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. Eaters are allowed to dunk the bun in water, but not for longer than 20 seconds.

Local contests are hosted by the talented Richard Shea, who provides inspirational music and accompanying humor. Some competitive eaters attract pretty large cheering sections, and you will likely see custom clothing inspired by a fans favorite eater. Competitive eaters include Japanese eating sensation Takeru Kobayashi, Crazy Legs Conti, Dale Boone and more.

The July Fourth competition starts at noon on Independence Day. "Our July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest has become an institution that reaches new heights each year," says Wayne Norbitz, President and COO of Nathan's Famous, Inc. on the Major League Eating Web site. "Last year's event was watched by more people than ever and this year's anticipated rematch between Kobayashi and Chestnut is generating incredible excitement," he said. The event will be broadcast on ESPN and will be seen throughout the world.

There will be competitions held throughout June 2007 in the following cities. Shea Stadium, NY, Charlotte, NC, At the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, Norfolk, VA, Cranbury, NJ, Atlanta, GA, San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, and West Chester, PA.
