July Holidays & Celebrations

Family Fun for July

Angela W. La Fon

July is the seventh month of the year and the first full month of summer. The most well know holiday of July is of course Independence Day on July 4th but July is home to many popular month long celebrations, week long celebrations and special holidays. You'll notice that foods and outdoors are the central themes of July celebrations, which is perfect because July is National Picnic month as well.

National Hot Dog Month

Have a good old-fashioned weenie roast over the grill this month.

National Ice Cream Month

Make some old-fashioned homemade ice cream together or host a neighborhood ice cream party.

National Recreation and Parks Month

Have you visited a state park lately?

National Peach Month

Visit a peach farm and create a new peach dessert together.

National Bison Month

Challenge kids to check out some library books on bison and share some interesting bison facts on your next trip.

National Picnic Month

Have a picnic together this month even if it is in your own backyard.

National Baked Bean Month

Teach your kids your favorite baked beans recipe.

Blueberry Month

Visit a pick your own blueberry farm and create a blueberry dessert as a family. Read the award-winning (Caldecott Honor in 1949) children book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey.

National Tennis Month

Tennis anyone? Teach your kids how to keep score in tennis- love, 15, 30, 40. Play as a family at a local park.

July 2 is the halfway point of the year.

Celebrate with a variety of half sandwiches for a picnic.

July 4th is Independence Day.

Challenge your kids to read up on the history of Independence Day and create an Independence Day trivia game for your July 4th celebration.

Try these Cheap Fourth of July Party Ideas to keep your party budget in check.

July 8 is Stamp Day.

Do some fun research together. How much did a stamp cost when each member of your family was born?

July 15 is Cow Appreciation Day.

For young readers check out the funny Minnie & Moo easy reader series by Denys Cazet.

How many tasty ways can you appreciate cows today? Yogurt? String cheese? Ice cream?

July 18th is Shark Awareness Day.

Snap up some library books on sharks and scare up some interesting facts about sharks for your next family car trip.

July 20 is Moon Day.

Draw and name the four phases of the moon. Even better, bake up some moon shaped cookies.

July 28th is Beatrix Potter Day.

Beatrix Potter, the author of the Peter Rabbit books, was born on July 20, 1866. For younger children, check out some books from the library by Beatrix Potter. For older kids challenge them to research biographies of Beatrix Potter and share some interesting facts on the next family car trip.
