Frenchy's sits on a pure white sandy beach overlooking the breathtaking Gulf of Mexico. Just off of the Causeway Blvd. in downtown Clearwater on Rockaway St, lies a little hot spot, that serves more than just great food.
Be prepared, Frenchy's is almost always busy, even if you get their early before the lunch and dinner rush.
Parking can also be tricky; it is hard to find a free place to park anywhere in Clearwater, even at the eateries. Don't be afraid to walk a distance, trust me, it will be worth it.
Upon entering Frenchy's Rockaway Café from the side, you walk in and find there is loud music, pictures and autographs of famous people and Key West flair styled signs adorning the walls.
They have a large, crowded indoor dining area, but also an outdoor deck area with umbrella tables over looking the Gulf- (gorgeous.) Be sure to get there extra early so you can catch a seat and watch the sunset. The sunset at Frenchy's is world renowned and people come from all over to see this once in a lifetime spectacle!
We ordered some appetizers when we sat down at our table. Aside of the delicious Long Island Ice Tea I decided to get for myself, the Conch Fritters were very scrumptious. They are served warm, and crispy on the outside, with white tender conch meat on the inside, on the side a Cajun creamy dipping sauce seals the deal. Everyone loved it, and it went fast, no leftovers that's for sure. Of course Frenchy's has a full service bar and can concoct any creation you can think up.
I ordered what is known to be Frenchy's specialty- the grouper sandwich. Grouper is prosperous in the Gulf area, and I love fresh seafood. The sandwich was huge and almost overwhelming for a sandwich. It was deep fried grouper, with lettuce tomato and mayo on a bun. Definitely not something you eat everyday, so it was a real treat!
Of course my all American and anti fish eating children order what they always do, chicken tenders and cheeseburgers. Of course they had no complaints and said the food was good.
My husband ordered the Rockaway She Crab soup, and thought the taste was creamy and rich. With huge chunks of crab, he fell in love with the taste.
Some other popular items on the menu are the Cheddar Stuffed Shrimp, Rockaway deviled crab cakes, Oysters Rockaway and of course, Calamari. The Grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich and the Caribbean jerk shrimp platter are also renowned favorites.
The cost of meals is fairly reasonable for the area, for a family of 5 with drinks (two of them alcohol) the total was about $55.00
Frenchy's also has other locations in the area, the original café, the salt water café and the south beach café.
Which ever you choose, Frenchy's signature food line and casual atmosphere is a must stop on your trip through Clearwater.
