Created in a way which makes learning fun (and it actually is, this system has been 9 year old tested with, I might add, his 15 year old brother even joining in at times when certain subjects seem to merit the "teen age" opinion and explanation) without pressure or the common paper and pencil learning that so many technologically geared kids are turning away from.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with pencil and paper learning and as an educator, I feel it is important to put thoughts to paper and understand what the world has in store for all of us as well as what pencil and paper work can accomplish. But there is also a place in education and in review especially to bring out the new and exciting "big guns" and supplement the regular textbook learning with something new and exciting.
This series is based on a professor (Professor Polly) who is somewhat of a "know it all". She leads the kids through subject such as Reading, Math, and Language arts where she polishes knowledge in over 30 different skill levels for each age group child. Including between 1 and 4 players, children can also challenge each other to see who comes up with answers the fastest and Professor Polly is always there to keep score and cheer on the students as they win. Professor Polly, which I honestly find fascinating, and which I've heard my son repeat many times in regular conversation, showing her points are certainly being retained and shared as well, also doles out bonus facts.
Also included in Professor Polly's learning system are "test taking tips", "fun fact videos" and even a section where you can "match wits with Polly" something my son enjoys doing, cheering when he beats her at her own game. To say this learning DVD is fun is an understatement...it is a fantastic way for kids to have fun and learn at the same time. Check her system out for yourself to see if you agree that Professor Polly is a great learning friend for your kid....we think so in our house!
One last note.... This is meant in no way to be a substitute for regular textbook or school room learning but is instead a "brush up" of knowledge the student may have already covered and/or an introduction to subjects not yet broached in the classroom. When seen as such, this series can be of great benefit to the child and the parent as well, as it is an approach that appeals to most every child in a non-threatening way.
Below are a few links where you can find a listing of the entire grade appropriate Power Prep DVD's available. At prices of under $15 each, they are reasonable in price and priceless in the knowledge your child will garner from using Professor Polly in your home.
I actually found my son's copies of power prep on Ebay so if you are an Ebay user, you might check there first. My copies were new in the package and actually were a fraction of the cost of purchasing from the above three merchants. Good luck and give Professor Polly a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the knowledge she will impart to your child!
