June Journal Writing Prompts for Students

Creative Writing Ideas for School or Home

Angela W. La Fon
June is the home of many holidays, celebrations and observances that can inspire fresh writing prompts for student's journal writing. During June we welcome the first day of summer, the end of school and honor dads on Father's Day. June is also National Dairy Month, Zoo Month, National Iced Tea Month, Safety Month and Rose Month. Teachers and parents can create a variety of fun writing prompts keeping these observances in mind and connecting them with writing goals.

Over the month of June writing prompts should encourage several styles of writing including fiction, non-fiction, how to, poetry and more. Journal writing prompts can also be crafted to help students review writing titles, such as Mr. and Mrs., spelling the names of months or seasons and many more writing skill goals.

15 Journal Writing Prompts for June:

1. Write a creative letter from Mrs. Spring that welcomes Mrs. Summer and let's her know what has been going on in the past few months.

2. Is summer your favorite season? Write about your favorite season and give at least three reasons why you chose it.

3. What do you hope to do most this summer? Write about what you plan to do and why.

4. Write about the most interesting topic you learned about this school year and convince a reader why it is fascinating.

5. Write a rhyming poem about roses that does not begin with "roses are red."

6. The birthstone for June is a pearl. Write a funny story about an oyster that does not want to give up her pearl.

7. June is National Dairy Month. What is your least favorite dairy food and why?

8. Write step by step instructions for making a milkshake.

9. Write a funny story about a cow that wants to get paid for her milk.

10. Write an acrostic poem for Father's Day with a word for each of the letters in Father.

11. June is National Safety Month. Write three safety tips for riding a bike.

12. Write three safety tips for cooking dinner.

13. Write three safety tips for being at a swimming pool.

14. What is your favorite zoo animal and why?

15. Write a short story about a zoo animal that escapes.

Even if school is ending, journal writing through out the summer is a great way to continue to practice writing skills. Along with summer reading lists, teachers and parents can also offer kids summer journal writing prompts to encourage daily journal writing.
