Just Another Modest Proposal

Wayne McDonald
I am of the personal opinion that the only reason that an otherwise emotionally-intact, non-delusional, man or woman seeks public office is their desire to obtain enough political power to insure that their votes will command the highest possible dollar value that does not attract the attention of the FBI.

If our lawmakers are indeed sincere in their stated goal of "reforming" the nation's health care delivery system, I propose that they demonstrate their commitment to that goal by immediately giving up their current, expensive, private health care coverage and instead obtain all their (and their families') health care from one of the following groups of providers:

* The Emergency Room / Family Practice / General Medicine Clinic at either the Georgetown or Howard University Hospitals in Washington DC;

* Any university medical center / teaching hospital in their home districts;

* Any "Free" or "Neighborhood" Clinic;

* Any Veteran's Administration Hospital or VA Outpatient Clinic, or

* Any hospital operated in conjunction with the U.S. Public Health Service and / or the Indian Health Service.

In addition to saving the taxpayers a few million dollars, forcing our supposed public servants to accept the same health care providers as the majority of taxpayers will inject a bit of reality into the obviously unworkable idea that "Congress Knows Best." But, sadly, that won't be happening any time soon.

And why is that? If you read the fine print in every proposed piece of "health care reform" legislation, you will notice that the US Congress has once again exempted itself from complying with the legislation that it will impose on the rest of us. That's right; Congress doesn't have to play by the same rules it forces on everyone else. Just like with the wage and hour laws, organized labor laws, and even civil rights legislation, our Congress is above its own laws!

(If you think that I'm making that up, just try this source or this one. In case you didn't notice, neither of these sources has a reputation for rabid conservatism).

I saw a bumper sticker the other day, one that read "George Washington Would Have Formed an Army by Now." To my way of thinking, George's response would have been too conservative. From here, the French Revolution is looking like the one with the better ideas.
