Just Another Shift (Revised)

Just Another Shift

My patient is
Draped with blankets

His Lhasa Apso dog
is keeping vigil

The daughter leans over
Rests against her father

She gets up, gets a sponge,
To wet his lips.

I see a short burst of light,
A sparkle

My aging eyes, trick me
Creaky retinas, slow pupils,

But why did the only spark grace the man's gentle brow
Why is it hard not to believe

In something
