Just Be-Claus - a Rhyming Trick on Old St. Nick

Preserving Santa's Magic for One More Year

Linda Ann Nickerson

One Christmas, as my child turned six,
Her questions had me in a fix.
A classmate had betrayed the myth,
And many questions came forthwith.

My workshop door had been shut tight,
Preparing for that Christmas night,
Until her voice began to quake,
"Hey, Mom, is Santa really fake?"

Inside my heart, the great debate
Was causing me to contemplate:
Perpetuating Santa lore
Could cause my child to question more.

The Easter Bunny, every spring,
The molar fairy, coins to bring,
If these their fiction should reveal,
Would children question what is real?

Our Christmas magic we adore;
I had to stall, just one year more.
I wanted Santa to return;
Another year, my child could learn.

So, as she slept, I crept upstairs.
Amid my basket of repairs,
I found a scarlet flannel scrap
And headed down to set my trap.

The hearth was open, stockings hung.
I planted clues to fool my young.
When we awoke, on Christmas morn,
We found that Santa's pants were torn.

A tiny remnant, barely seen,
Was dangling on the fireplace screen.
The great elf must have felt a draft,
As he flew up the chimney shaft.

My ruse, it worked just like a charm.
All questioning, it did disarm.
I gained twelve months to make appeal:
"Yes, Santa's myth, but Christ is real!"

Years later, we recall and laugh
How Santa split his pants in half.
We've kept the tattered remnant too;
It's scrapbooked for each Christmas view.

    this is great! I left letters on their bedside tables once had special paper and fountain pen with flourish and even considered a reindeer print. We used to hide stuff in the attic and stomp on the floor over their heads getting stuff uot and they thought it was real and we could hear them shushing each other. I miss it all terribly.

    How fun...we went to great lengths when our children of differing ages began the debate. It is fun for them to hold onto to the magic.
