Just the Other Day

Benjamin Harrell
It's as if the whole world stands still when you walk in the room.

I playback your last words every few minutes, "I will be home soon!"

It was patience that led us here; it seems I remember it all as clear as yesterday.

There you were, more hesitant than fearful to walk my way.

I said excuse me but you acted as if you didn't hear me as you paraded around with that smile.

We were at your favorite coffee spot so I asked you to sit with me and stay a while.

You told me about your past and the ones that ran off with your heart in the night.

I say I'm sorry as you play with your hair telling me you've grown since then and it's alright.

I learn so much that day but the only things I can think about are the dimples on your face.

You told me that if it was meant to be then it would all fall into place.

So like pieces to a puzzle I decided to get myself together not realizing I was perfect in your eyes.

As we grew I learned more and more that what we have is a result of a mind and heart that collide.

You told me that you would never let a good thing slip away because blessings could be gone in the wink of an eye.

You thought I would leave because of what happened that night but when you saw that I was there in the morning, you cried.

I told you that I would be there, and those words came from the heart.

Not even the weather will stop our walks at the park.

Here we are, back to the basics or more like back to the beginning of the union with no end.

Back at your favorite coffee spot ordering you a drink but I forget what to buy - or at least I pretend.

We communicate without saying a word; your eyes translate your thoughts.

And in silence, we stare at each and find ourselves lost.

I begin to speak on how we met as if we weren't sitting at the table where it all began.

Our chemistry became the blueprint though our thoughts made the plans.

I cannot predict what's next for us but I know we will share the experience.

I appreciate the past; because you are my present... this bond will never diminish.
