Just What ARE Those Squiggly Lines in Your Vision?

L. Rogler
Have you ever noticed a squiggly, seemingly transparent line in your vision, but every time you try to look at it, it seems to dart away? I know I have, Family Guy fans know that Stewie Griffin has, and it has become a favorite topic of discussion at social gatherings. But just what are those almost creature-like squiggles? Well in the medical world, they are called "vitreous floaters," and they can be quite annoying. But not to worry, doctors say they are usually harmless!

The lines are a result of debris becoming lodged in the vitreous fluid, and usually follow the movement of the eye. This is why they dart away when you try to look at them. They are usually most visible when looking at a light background, such as the sky or a white surface.

While doctors say they are usually harmless, they can be a sign of a condition called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). PVD occurs when the vitreous gel separates from the retina. This is pretty common, but usually the floaters are not associated with these tears in the retina. You may also notice the floaters becoming more prevalent during your third trimester of pregnancy, allergy season, or after wearing old contact lenses. If you experience flashes in your vision or numerous ring shaped floaters, contact your ophthalmologist immediately, as this can be a sign of a bigger problem.

Some people might be wondering if there is a cure for these nuisances, but unfortunately there isn't. Some people swear by eye drops, but this usually does not work. A vitrectomy or laser vitreolysisis is also sometimes said to cure these floaters, but doctors warn against these procedures for such minor symptoms. Aside from safety concerns, there is no guarantee it will get rid of the floater, and it may even create new ones!

So it seems we will all have to live with our squiggly lines until they decide to depart on their own. We can, however, take solace in the fact that they are probably harmless, so enjoy your new companion, because it might just be with you for quite a while.
