Justice Shouldn't Black or White

Sin Lucas
Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, of Knoxville, Tennessee, were kidnapped, raped, tortured and brutally murdered on January 6, 2007, but before today I had never heard their names.

While returning home from a date the two were carjacked and kidnapped. They were taken to the home of one of the suspects where both were raped, tortured and murdered. Christopher Newsom's body was found bound and burned while Christian's body was found in the abandoned rental house.

The suspected killers, Eric DeWayne "E" Boyd, George Geovonni "Detroit" Thomas, Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins and Vanessa Coleman, all African American are in custody and awaiting trial, and I hope that they are given the most severe punishment the law allows, but this article isn't about their punishment, it's about the alleged media cover up.

Since the crime occurred there has been speculation all over the internet that the reason this brutal crime hasn't received as much attention as other crimes is because the victims were white and the suspects are all African American. It has been said that if the victims were indeed black that this horrendous crime would have been all over the news by now. Observers, and according to wikipedia.org, even country musician Charlie Daniels have claimed media bias in the case and countless hate groups have flooded the internet with this very accusation, but frankly I think that's absurd.

I have no idea why this case hasn't gotten more attention, but I don't believe it has anything to do with race. The media has NEVER ignored crimes committed or allegedly committed by African Americans. Don't believe me then watch your local news tonight. Watch it any night.

I find it funny how given time all races complain about the same things. How many times have black people complained about media bias? How many times have black people complained about the judicial prejudice and racial profiling? In fact if I was to sit here and give you a list of complaints that black people have made, just since the time I've been born, then this article would be longer then the constitution.

For those that don't know, I'm black, and I believe that this crime should have gotten more attention. I believe it was brutal and sick, and frankly I think that the death penalty is far too nice for ones that committed this crime against these innocent people, but DON'T turn it into something it's not. DON'T pen this crime on a race or even a community of people, and if your unhappy with the media coverage then write letters to the editor, boycott, whatever, but DON'T use this as an accuse to spread more hate because at the end of the day it doesn't matter what color these victims were, they were people just like you and me and that's why they deserve justice, not because they were white.

This is a gut wrenching story and I cannot imagine what either victim had to go through.

I am sick that so many hinge on the fact of bringing race into the picture. As what more does a bunch of criminals have to do to any person regardless of race and their crime certainly changed countless lives involved.

It's haineous and sick what they did. How would they perceive it if it were their sister, mother, father, brother, or even their child?

I hope that they all recieve the death penalty, even though I believe that would be to good for them and they if receive life in prison should be among general population.

My heart goes out to the victim's and their families.

Want proof that this was motivated by "hate"? Look at the gruesome details! Repeated rape over the course of hours on two scared kids who never even fought back! I think the whole 'hate crime' idea is bullshit myself, but you better believe, if the races were reversed in this situation, it damn sure would have made national headlines, and been called a 'hate-crime' in the court of public opinion long before the actual trial even began (remember the "Duke Lacrosse Team" farce?)

You "tolerant" people are idiots, really. I mean tolerance is what got us here. OK, try this on for size: you folks are just intolerant of these poor criminals rights. I mean it's there culture to abduct, rape & kill whitie. So please, give them a break & become more tolerant.

    Morons, the lot of you.

How about having some morals, and enforcing the code of law based on these morals? Tolerance brings nothing but compromise. I hope you whities are tolerant when we come take you...LOL!

I haven't heard of this case, but I would think just because it involved different races it would still get a lot of attention no matter the combination!

Andie said "Separation racially seems like the only answer, because every time there is black on white crime...the issue of race will always...always come up."... Ok, well let's replace Black with "man" and White with "woman". Are we going to separate men and women b/c of all the times men have killed their wives or vice versa? Separation solves nothing, the country is slowly gaining more tolerance and I believe eventually no one will care about race anymore, but they will find another way to split into groups. Democrats vs Liberals, Men vs Women, Black vs White, Christians vs NonChristians... we can't go separating groups of people just because they disagree. We have to work towards more tolerance. Good article Sindy :)

Sorry, gotta disagree on the death penalty. Studies show that Blacks are up to eight times more likely to get the chair or the chambers, compared to Whites who commit equally horrific crimes. And even if it's not in this case, as long as we have capital punishment, innocents sooner or later have their lives taken and then when it's too late, contrary evidence emerges. Life without patrol, but not the death penalty.

Wow, It's hard to believe that people can be so evil. It seems like they gravitate towards each other. I agree with Donna, people are just numb and don't react anymore. I hope these evil #$$#& get punished soon.

I hope the media's excuse is that they just can't find the stomach to report on this unbiasedly. This was a horrible crime. I agree that race should never have been even mentioned in this crime.
Five people Kidnapped, Tortured, Raped and Killed two other people. Why? That should be the question. Not what color were the perps or victims, but WHY does anyone think that they can do this to other people?
I believe its time for us to put aside all the race, religion and lifestyle organizations and all join together in a Human Movement. Stop Hate. Start Tolerance. ('cause Love is just too much to ask, lets start with Tolerance)

I think society is becoming numb to crime in general - since Columbine and 9/11 I think even the VA Tech shootings were less of a "shock" than in former days.
