Justify the Cause

Jean Marie
Images on television showing the faces that endure

oppression and prejudice in their everyday lives

The camera zooms in to take a closer look

Flies in a child's eyes as she eats oats crying

Tears falling down her face

Yet the river of tears cannot wash the flies away so they stay

A woman is lying dying in the road to weak to go on

It is hot and humid

My lungs begin to boil with every breath I take in

Suddenly, the camera does an about-face

Hundreds, maybe thousands are being massacred with

machetes and gun fire

Nevertheless, cruel punishment

Inequality, aggression, the need to control, human suffering,

going to war

All in the need to look out for one's best interests and live in a

more secure nation

Was it all worth it?

For now we look over our shoulder not only abroad, but

now at home
