Justin Bieber - Sydney Police Cancel Free Outdoor Australian Concert Due to Safety Concerns
Bieber Fever - Australia's Network 7 Sunrise Morning Show Justin Bieber Concert Canceled Due to Crowd Crush Concerns
Bieber Fever hits Sydney, Australia
Justin Bieber was scheduled to perform three songs at a free concert at the Forecourt of the Overseas Passenger Terminal at North Quay, Sydney this morning. The concert, organized by Network 7's Sunrise morning TV show, has been canceled by Police concerned for the safety of teenage fans. This would have been Justin Bieber's only Australian public performance during his brief time in Australia.
By 4.00 am, more than 5,000 teens (mainly girls) had assembled at the venue and no less than 10 young girls had to be rescued in crowd crush circumstances and treated by St Johns Ambulance officers. At about 4.45 am, Police had no option but to cancel the concert. They were concerned for the safety of the crowd and extra Police were called in to assist with crowd control.
Some teenage girls had been at the venue since 7.00 am yesterday (25 April). They had flown in from all over Australia at considerable expense - just to see their idol - Canadian Pop Star Justin Bieber. TV coverage on Network 7 at 6.00 am showed the crowds refusing to budge, girls crying and frenzied by the cancellation, distressed that they are not going to see and hear their idol. Police were having a hard time trying to control them and usher them away from the venue.
About a hundred teenage girls had also gathered outside the Network 7 city studios in Martin Place, waving photos of Justin and screaming for him. They were obviously hoping that Justin would turn up there instead of at the abandoned concert. Network 7 reported that canceled means "canceled" and there will be no Justin performance today in Sydney. Network 7 Sunrise hosts, Melissa Doyle and David Koch were apologetic but stressed that it would be irresponsible to allow the concert to proceed given the crowd circumstances. It is thought no such reception has been witnessed in Sydney since the Beatles toured Australia during their hey day.
The 16 year old Canadian singer is reported to have had a great weekend in the harbour city. He visited Palm Beach, kicked a football around, had dinner at a Bondi Restaurant and also saw wildlife attractions on the outskirts of the city.
I guess disappointed fans will have to wait until Justin makes it back to Australia for a full-scale concert tour. One thing is sure - Justin Bieber's concert tour of Australia, when it happens, will be a sell-out event.
