Justin Timberlake Just 'In Time' for Sci-Fi Thriller

Pop Star Steps into Lead Role and the Future

Justin Timberlake has been a supporting player or had to share the limelight with someone else for most of his short career in Hollywood. All that hard work has finally paid off as he steps into the lead role in the upcoming sci-fi thriller "In Time." Many people will immediately write off Timberlake because of his affiliation with boy band N*Sync, but try to push that image out of your head and give the guy a chance. After all, he has picked a genre film to step into the forefront with.

"In Time" has Timberlake "liv[ing] in the near future, [where] people are immortal because the aging gene has been deactivated. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency. The rich can live forever, and the rest have to negotiate for their immortality. When a young man comes into a fortune of time, he ends up on the run from a corrupt force known as 'time keepers.'"

I know what you are thinking. "In Time" sounds like a remake of "Logan's Run," or a mish-mash of that movie plus "The Island" and "Gattaca." Well, that is not surprising given that "Gattaca" was "In Time" director Andrew Niccol's feature film debut.

The trailer and a sizzle reel for "In Time" recently debuted at Comic-Con and now a new trailer is up on the Internet. Honestly, the movie looks entertaining for an "everybody's out to get me" chase-type movie. It is definitely nothing new and has been done a thousand times before. If it leads to a fun two hours at the multiplex, what does it matter?

I have to say that I like the way everything looks familiar in the future of "In Time." I am a big fan of movies featuring cryptic futures like "Blade Runner" and the like, but every once in a while it's good to see one where cars don't fly, it's not dark all the time, and machines haven't completely taken over civilization. The future in this movie seems to be a bit more realistic.

Andrew Niccol wrote and directed "in Time." It stars Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, Alex Pettyfer, and Matt Bomer. The film is not yet rated. The future will be here October 28, 2011.
