K-8 Social Science and History Programs

A k-8 history and social science program must have a lot of goals. The most important goal is to teach students new information. The material should be on the students learning level and not too hard or too easy for them. The program should be challenging for the students, but it shouldn't be too challenging. The program needs to be as multicultural as possible and celebrate diversity. The programs should celebrate diversity and help students find similarities among different cultures. While the program should focus on the U.S., other countries and parts of the world need to be discussed as well. Another goal must be to allow students to have a reasonable amount of fun while being safe and to enjoy learning about history and social science. Another goal must be to minimize the amount of independent work as much as possible. Research has shown that students work best in groups and that it's important for students to socialize in the classroom, so teachers must assign as many partner and group activities as possible.

Another goal must be to integrate other subject areas into social science and history classes and integrate social studies and science into other subjects. Students can learn new vocabulary words in history class, do word problems relating to social sciences or history in math class, and read about history in language arts, etc. It's important to integrate all subjects and relate materials in all subjects. This makes learning a lot more interesting and exciting for students. Integrating subjects is becoming more and more common in curriculums, and integrated units are becoming more and more popular.

Another major goal must be to make science and social studies as hands on as possible. The information also needs to be as interesting and exciting as possible for the students. Students learn by doing, not just be reading and being lectured. Students also need to get out of their desks once in a while, and letting them do hands on activities is a good way to get students up and moving. Students also need to have material that they're interested in since they won't learn or retain information that they don't care about.
