Kalachandji Palace and Restaurant: Eating Healthy in Dallas

Enjoy Delicious Vegetarian Meals at Dallas' Oldest Vegetarian Restaurant

Kalachandji's Palace and Restaurant in East Dallas is the city's oldest vegetarian restaurant. They have been serving up healthy and delicious ancient Indian vegetarian dishes for 27-years. The restaurant is located at the Hare Krishna Temple at 5430 Gurley Avenue.

Kalachandji's mission is to provide its diners with vegetarian cuisine that promotes good health, is pleasing to the palate, elevates the consciousness, and makes the mind peaceful.

How wonderfully marvelous does that sound?

The restaurant practices "the timeless Ayurvedic art of cooking for the body, mind and spirit, and all our dishes are prepared with the best ingredients available."

Kalachandji's tradition is lacto-vegetarian but they are committed to serving everyone in the vegetarian community. Menu items containing dairy products and wheat are clearly marked on their menu.

Patrons won't find any fish, meat, onions, or garlic in their dishes; cold pressed extra virgin olive oil is used when making salad dressings and turbinado sugar is used in their desserts and tamarind tea.

Kalachandji's offers buffet-style dining with dishes changing daily. Dishes include the delicious Sabji, a vegetable curry consisting of either a combination of vegetables or a single vegetable delicately spiced. They also offer fresh baked breads like whole wheat and cinnamon raisin.

Kalachandji's Has a Unique Atmosphere:

What I really love about Kalachandji's is the beautiful outdoor garden complete with a fountain, tables and booths - perfect for an outdoor dining experience on warm Texas days and nights.

The staff is very friendly and the service is absolutely wonderful. There is no other dining experience like it in North Texas. Diner's feel like they have been transported to India.

Something else that makes this an overall wonderful experience is that the palace (yes, a real life palace!) sits adjacent to the restaurant. Visitors are welcome to visit and "enter into the mood of this centuries-old tradition."

Kalachandji's has received numerous awards including:

-' Best Healthy Dining' from AOL Cityguide
- 'Best Vegetarian Restaurant' from Pegasus News (DFW's Ultimate Best 2010)
- 'Best Vegetarian Restaurant' from the Dallas Observer (Best of Dallas 2010)

Hours of Operation:

Lunch is served Tuesday - Friday 11:30-2:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Noon to 3:00 p.m.
Dinner is served Tuesday - Sunday 5:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.

The restaurant is closed Mondays.

Prices:

Kalachandji's is very inexpensive considering the food, top-notch atmosphere, and service. Prices range from $6.95 for a lunch from the salad bar to just $10.95 for dinner from the hot buffet and salad bar.

To keep within ancient tradition, their menu prices are "suggested donations." If you can afford to throw in a little extra, please do so.
