Kaleb and the Rock

Sandra Hatfield
Someone was knocking at the door. Kaleb jumped nearly out of his bed. He quickly hid the book he had taken from his father's "forbidden" library under his blankets and turns his flashlight off. Just before he could say, "Come in," his mother quickly opens his door.

"I know you are not asleep Kaleb! What are you up to?" she asked in her stern motherly tone.

"What do you got under you blanket?" she asks.

"Nothing" he says as convincing as he possibly can.

"Whatever, just get to sleep." She said half convinced.

As the door closes behind her Kaleb begins to listen for his mother to go to bed. When he was sure she was in bed he pulls out the book and his flashlight. He begins to read the book and finds out that it was his father's journal. He was going to put it down but as he looks at the first page he sees that there were what seemed to be codes of some kind.

Strange! He thought to himself.

As he turns the pages he found more and more codes and there were even symbols that did not make any sense to Kaleb.

What could these codes mean?

When he picked up the book a strange rock with symbols fell out of it.

Where did this come from? He asked out loud by accident, startling himself.

With a moment of pause to make sure that no one was coming he continued to look at this rock and the symbols were similar to the ones in his father's book. Many questions begin to flood his mind as he tries to make sense of what is going on here.

With a yawn he decides to put everything away in his hiding place in the wall behind his bed. That way no one will know he had it. He adjusts himself into bed and begins to dose off.

As he begins to fall asleep there was a strange noise that wakes him. He looks around and sees nothing.

Maybe it was a dream. He thought.

Laying back down he closes his eyes and then the noise happens again but this time louder. He sits up quickly and looks around and listens for the noise again. He grabs his flashlight and turns it on to see what might be in his room. He found nothing. As he lies back down the noise happens again and this time he was able to figure out what direction it was. It seemed to be coming from the wall behind his bed.

That is strange? What could make that noise inside my wall?

As he gets closer he sees that it was coming from his hiding place where he put his father's book and the strange rock. As he gets closer he becomes more curious but at the same time scared. After taking a moment to gain the nerve to see what was making that noise. He opens up the spot in the wall and the noise stops.

Hmmm... That is weird.

He grabs the rock and with a matter of seconds the rock jumps out of his hand and begins to roll around his floor. He gets up and goes after it trying to catch it before it wakes his mother. All of a sudden it stops and then it cracks. There was a strange sitting noise when the rock opens up and begins to create a whorl wind. He notices all of a sudden he begins to get sucked in to the rock. Try as he might he could not stop it. He screams for help and grabs on to anything he can grab. He ended up being sucked into the little rock. It seemed for ever before he landed in a cold river.

Realizing that he was no longer in his bedroom he ended up in some strange place. He swam as hard as he could but it seemed to take forever. As he swam he looked down stream where he was going and saw that it was a water fall. Try as he might he just wasn't strong enough to swim to the bank. Before he knew it he ended up falling down the waterfall, which seemed to take forever. He screamed and screamed but he never landed in a pool of water. He just kept on falling. When he looked down where he was falling there was a black hole. As he screamed he kicked and tried to grab onto everything. Then he enters the black hole. He continued to scream for help and then he suddenly wakes up in his bed.

That was a weird dream! Or was it? He asked himself with a shudder.
