Kane (aka Glen Jacobs): Ten Years of Terrorizing the WWE

Jeff D Gorman
As a longtime wrestling writer and announcer, I have seen a lot of big wrestlers. Most of these behemoths lack mobility and personality. One who has both is Kane, who may be the most underrated wrestler on the WWE roster.

When you look at his size (7 feet, 326 pounds) and agility, you wonder why the WWE hasn't pushed Kane to the top of one of its three brands. In fact, Kane has held tag team titles on nine occasions with six different partners. Kane has only spent one day as the WWE champion.

I remember it well, because I was there. It was King of the Ring 1998 in Pittsburgh. Kane was challenging Stone Cold Steve Austin for the title in a First Blood match. In the weeks leading up to the show, The Big Red Machine said that if he didn't win the title, he would set himself on fire!

When I walked into the arena, I saw the gasoline cans on the announcers' table. That meant something big had to happen. It did, as Kane stunned the crowd by drawing Stone Cold's blood to win the title. Of course, Kane lost the belt back to Austin one night later in Cleveland - but nobody can take that win away.

Kane's biggest problem is that he can't escape the shadow of The Undertaker. Paul Bearer, the former manager of Undertaker, brought "little brother" Kane to the WWE in 1997 to destroy the Dead Man.

Kane debuted by ripping the door off the cage in the first Hell in a Cell match. He attacked Undertaker to cost him a WWE title match against Shawn Michaels. Five months later, the brothers met for the first time at Wrestlemania, and the Undertaker won.

The idea was the Kane had been severely burned in a fire that killed the brothers' parents.

As time went on, Kane underwent a transformation. He became less of a monster and more of a human being. He formed a partnership with X-Pac, who encouraged him to speak without his electronic voice box.

Kane also lost his mask in a title vs. mask match against Triple H. Kane switched gears and became an even more maniacal monster, as he attacked everyone from Stone Cold to announcer Jim Ross to WWE CEO Linda McMahon.

That attack touched off a wild feud against Shane McMahon, which Kane ultimately won. Kane challenged Undertaker one more time at Wrestlemania XX, but Kane still couldn't get beat his big brother. I empathize with him; it happens to me all the time on the tennis court.

Kane later became obsessed with Lita and won the right to marry her in a "Til Death Do Us Part" match. They were about to have a baby when newcomer Gene Snitsky knocked Lita to the mat and caused her to lose the baby.

Kane eventually formed a tag team with a man even bigger than he is - The Big Show. They clobbered Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch to win the World tag team title. The duo was unstoppable until the day after Wrestlemania 22. It took all five members of The Spirit Squad to take the belts away.

After all this time as a wrestler, Kane put on a new hat: movie star. He was the villain in See No Evil, a literally eye-popping horror flick. Since then, the WWE has forgotten about Kane as a potential big-money wrestler. Hopefully, Kane will soon get a chance to prove he can be a champion for more than one day.

I don't think Kane has enough skills to be pushed (but then again they push Khali and he's about as talented as a rock!), but he should nevertheless.

Kane, you are without a doubt the best wrestler I have ever seen, and in my opinion you deserve a long title run after all you have done for the WWE. I can only pray and hope that the WWE will come to their senses and realize that.
