Kansas City Chiefs 2010 NFL Draft Day 3 Analysis

Thanks for reading my 2010 NFL Draft Day Three Analysis of the Kansas City Chiefs. I have been a Kansas City Chief fan since the day the Cowboys fired Tom Landry. For the last several years I have been a freelance sports writer/blogger, emphasizing football. I have already broken down day one of the Chiefs 2010 NFL draft here, and you can see my take on day two of the Kansas City Chiefs 2010 NFL draft here.

The Kansas City Chiefs didn't have a 4^th round pick in the 2010 NFL draft but I missed their last 3^rd round pick on day two. So here is my analysis of the Chiefs drafting tight end Tony Moeaki from Iowa. Moeaki isn't going to replace Tony Gonzalez as a receiving tight end. But Moeaki is a solid blocking tight end who may make the job easier for newly acquired Thomas Jones in the running game. In the past the Chiefs made use of a nice blocking tight end named Jason Dunn. Moeaki is shorter than Dunn but hopefully a little more athletic.

According to this ESPN article, Moeaki caught 30 passes for 387 yards and 4 touchdowns as a senior at Mississippi. In the 2009 FedEx Orange Bowl Moeaki caught 4 passes for 85 yards (including a 54 yarder) in Ole Miss's 24-14 win over Georgia Tech.

The Kansas City Chiefs first draft choice on day three of the 2010 NFL draft was free safety Kendrick Lewis from Ole Miss. Coming into the 2010 NFL draft; I felt the Chiefs needed defensive backs and offensive linemen. Lewis could place special teams as a rookie but I think he has a legitimate job at being the starting free safety. I just wonder if the Chiefs want two rookies starting at safety if Lewis joins Eric Berry in the defensive backfield. Kendrick Lewis was a college teammate of fellow Chiefs rookie Dexter McCluster.

I feel Lewis should help out on special teams due to being a good tackler, which the Chiefs can use. According to this ESPN article Lewis made 5 tackles and two interceptions in a 21-7 win over Oklahoma State in the 2009 AT&T Cotton Bowl.

Also on day three of the 2010 NFL draft the Chiefs selected defensive end Cameron Sheffield out of Troy. Since the Chiefs run a 3-4 defense that needs large defensive linemen, Sheffield will be moved to outside linebacker. At 6ft 2 and 257 pounds Sheffield is too small to play the line in most NFL defensive schemes.

I am not sold on Sheffield and he may be a practice squad player unless he makes the transition to linebacker very quickly. According to NFLdrafttable.com Sheffield is a good athlete and runs a 4.8 forty yard dash. This is acceptable for an NFL linebacker but it is on the slow side.

All in all I am happy with the 2010 NFL draft, day 3 picks of the Kansas City Chiefs. Right now my favorite pick would be Kendrick Lewis because of the team need for defensive backs.
