Kansas City Earth Day 2010

Stephanie Durden Edwards
Forty years ago, a U.S. senator from Wisconsin began an annual celebration to educate and inform youngsters on environmental matters. Senator Gaylord Nelson spent much of the 1960s worried over the state of the environment. After several earlier attempts to educate the masses about protecting the earth, in 1969 he considered the idea of organizing a national "teach-in" to bring national attention to the issues of environmental protection. His ideas took form and April 22, 1970 marked the first annual Earth Day celebration.

Communities across the United States and around the world come together to celebrate the earth and inform others how to care for the planet. Kansas City area organizations are ready to do their part with various events scheduled around the metro area in observance of Earth Day 2010.
