Kansas USA

In the Middle of the USA

In the middle of the United States, Kansas is an important transportation, farming, and manufacturing center.

Originally part of the French Louisiana Territory, Kansas became the gateway to westward migration as the beginning of the Oregon Trail and Santa Fe trail. Settlement began with the army outposts guarding those trails, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Scott, and Fort Riley, which are still in use by the United States Army.

Wichita became the largest town, which boomed as a cow town after the railroad arrived in the 1800s. Oil was discovered east of Wichita, and today continues as a small part of the regional economy. Wichita has had a long association with the aircraft industry, with Boeing, Cessna, and Beechcraft having factories there.

Atchison in eastern Kansas is the birthplace of famous aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Abilene was another cattle boom town of a while and is the birthplace of former president Dwight Eisenhower, which today hosts his burial plot and presidential museum. Johnson County, adjacent to Kansas City, is the wealthiest county in the state.

Dodge City is the largest city in western Kansas, known best as the cowboy capital of the world. A boom town during the cattle drive days of the 1880s, Dodge City produced the legendary deputies Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp, each of which had a Television show named after them. Along with bars and gambling halls, the Long Branch Saloon and The China Doll were the most popular brothels in the region, which included nearby Fort Dodge guarding the Santa Fe Trail.

The most memorable mention of Kansas was in the movie The Wizard of OZ, where a young Judy Garland proclaims that she wants to go home to Kansas.

The Kansas prairie is famous for it's level landscape, which runs over a hundred miles in places.
