Kant, Schleiermacher, Ritschl, Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Arminianism

6 Brief Questions Concerning Theology

Jared Moore
1. What impact did Kant's distinction between the phenomenal and the nominal have on the question of knowing God?

Kant's distinction underlies all subsequent theological work. He did not believe that the Bible was revelation, but it was merely a human witness to revelation.

2. For the consciousness theologians, Schleiermacher and Ritschl, is the Bible revelation?

No

3. Describe Karl Barth's understanding of Scripture. Does he consider the Bible to be the Word of God?

Barth exalted the Word of God. He said that the Bible is a witness to revelation, not existing as revelation. He did not believe that we could have theological knowledge of God. He believed that philosophy defined revelation. He denied that God's word was accessible to men.

4. What is the formal principle of evangelical Lutheranism?

Evangelical Lutheranism embraced the Book of Concorde as their confessional standard. This book was made up of the Oggsburg Confession, the Formula of Concorde, and Luther's small and large catechisms. They said that the scriptures alone were authoritative, and that justification was by faith alone. After salvation, we are, at the same time, both righteous and a sinner. The believer is not under the law. The Law only applies to the unbeliever. It only applies to the outward man while the gospel applies to the inward man.

5. What does Calvinism mean by "World and Life View"?

Calvinism means by the "World and Life View" that all of life is religious and should be developed under the Lordship of Christ. It emphasizes the work of the Spirit of God. It says that faith is a gift of God.

6. Outline the key differences between Arminian theology and Calvinistic theology (Using acronym TULIP).

Arminianism

-Calvinistic heresy

-Romans 7- struggle of an unregenerate man who had the power to will.
1. election is based on foreseen faith
2. Christ died for every man.
3. Man is depraved and grace is necessary therefore for believing.
4. The grace of God may be resisted.
5. Perseverance is uncertain and needs further investigation.
6. Emphasis on free will.
7. It's possible to trust Christ as Savior and not as Lord.
8. Free will is maintained
9. Grace is given to all men in an indiscriminant, universal, and equal fashion.
10. Predestination is based on his/her foreseen faith.
11. It is possible for one who has been redeemed, to fall from grace and lose his/her salvation.

Calvanism - 5 points
