Kanye West at 2010 MTV VMA: Is His "Runaway" Song an Apology to Taylor Swift?

Julia Bodeeb
Kanye West is always "colorful" in his antics and his music. He was never more so than at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Kanye wore a bright red suit at the MTV VMAs. It was reminiscent of the color of the devil. Much symbolism there Kanye?

Taylor Swift's VMA Song about Kanye West

Earlier in the show Taylor Swift sang a song about Kanye and the incident where he grabbed her microphone while she was receiving an award for best female video at the VMA. The song talked about his "innocence." Taylor seemed to be truly trying to let Kanye know that she felt forgiveness to him. It seemed clear that Taylor wants Kanye to move on and forgive himself too for the incident. She sang about how all people make mistakes.

Taylor looked ethereal as she was singing. She had on a floaty pale dress that highlighted her serenity.

Kanye West Shocks the World with his VMA Song "Runaway"

Kanye's song and look at the VMA took a different tactic. The minute he appeared in his glowing red suit it seemed sure that this was not going to be a contrite or an openly apologetic Kanye. No surprise there. But even the most jaded had to let out a little gasp at the opening line of his song "Runaway."

Kanye West let rip with the song lyric that may end up being the most quoted of 2010. His song "Runaway" performed at the VMA started with the line "Let's have a toast for the douche bags."

Is "Runaway" an Apology, Self Incrimination or Gloating?

Was this song meant as a roundabout apology to Taylor or was Kanye gloating about his bad boy antics? Is he sincere in mocking his own behavior or is he just refusing accountability for the cruel act of taking away Taylor's moment of glory while receiving her MTV VMA award?

The VMA awards have always had a hang loose feel to them. They are a bit Wild West in their comedy sketches and the comments of the performers. This year though Kanye has certainly added a new level of "reality" to the ceremony.

The crowd seemed to love the song. They were chanting Kayne's name when it ended. So has Kanye redeemed himself with this outré piece of music? Is all forgiven or does he still have the taint of a bully to his name?

What Next for Kanye West & Taylor Swift?

So is the hatchet buried now? Will each singer move on in their respective careers and simply forget all about the other? Or will there continue to be tweets on Twitter and songs alluding to the unfortunate incident at the MTV VMA in 2009?

Best wishes to Kanye and Taylor. They are both talented and they both struggle with their unique issues. It will be fascinating to watch where their careers take them in the future.
