Kanye West: More Good Than Damage

Kanye was Not Wrong!

Shaun M Mathis
It is said that the majority of our society looks at the glass as half empty but a small percentage of people, myself included, looks at the glass as half full. That is why while watching the 2009 VMA Awards on MTV, I applauded at Kanye West's' bold and untimely outburst in the middle of Taylor Swifts acceptance speech. Why did I applaud? I applauded because at the moment he said "Beyonce had the greatest video of all time." then shrugged before giving the microphone back to Taylor Swift, I saw the glass as half full. Like millions of other people that night, I opened my laptop and posted my reaction on my Facebook and Twitter page, "fuckin' love Kanye West." Contrary to my Facebook friends and Twitter followers, my reaction was not that of the masses. Why? Why didn't everyone see beyond the surface as I have? Don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place to voice your personal opinion, however, what better place to do it than at the 2009 VMA Awards and what better time than in the middle of a 19 year-old girls acceptance speech to the entire world?

If you are one of those few people that looks beyond the surface, you will see that Kanye West did everything right and nothing wrong--at all, and here is why. First, Kanye West's' outburst only strengthen out perception of him as an asshole, arrogant, cocky and of a person whom has no regards to anyone else's feelings. This is why his why his music is so great and his concerts sell out. His arrogance and seemingly reckless behavior pours out and over into his music making us support him even more. Everyone loves a "bad" guy and Kanye has assumed the role. His actions at the 2009 VMA Awards did not tarnish his image at all.

Secondly, Kanye West helped Taylor Swift in a tremendous way. By embarrassing the hell out of this little country singing vocalist Mr. West has the American people beyond sympathetic to her feelings. Subsequently, Taylor Swifts song has been the #1 downloaded since the VMA's, which has taken some of the attention from Jay Z's Blueprint 3. People outside the country music circle who did not know who Taylor Swift was now know and listen to her music as sympathy to her. People within country music will now, more than ever, throw themselves in support of her. If anything, this incident has boosted the notoriety of Taylor Swift and her music thus drastically helping with album sales. She should be thanking Kanye West right now.

Next, Kanye West also helped out the more talented for words, Beyonce Knowles. For every action there is a reaction and the acts of Kanye West provided Beyonce with the perfect opportunity to be Taylor Swifts knight in shinning armor. When winning the Single of the Year award, Beyonce called Taylor Swift to the stage to have her "moment". By doing this, Mrs. Knowles demonstrated her caring, sympathetic and humanitarians side. Not that it needed it, but her image is extra perfect because of this. In addition, country music fans who may not be fans of Beyonce will now support her music or any venue she does. Those who were not fans of Beyonce prior to the 2009 VMA Awards are fans today and if not then those people now respect her on a level that he or she did not previously. The opportunity Beyonce received to boost her image and reputation would have not been possible without Kanye West. She should be thanking him as well.

Furthermore, the ratings on The View the next day were that much higher because of Taylor Swifts appearance. Everyone wanted her opinion of the previous nights fireworks, even myself, because I wanted to see if she was going to continue to play victim and milk the situation for all its worth--and she did. In addition, Jay Leno's new time nightly talk show has none other than Kanye West as a guest thus boosting his ratings as well. So why are we all upset? Are upset because someone got embarrassed on national television? Yet we tune into reality shows with the hope that someone embarrasses him or herself. Sites such as TMZ magazine follows around celebrities waiting to capture something that will deface that actor, actress or athlete. So why are we upset? We are upset because we are looking at the glass half empty instead of half full. Being in the public image subjects one to attacks, ill intentioned or not, from everyone and that includes fellow musicians and artists. I think that if Taylor Swift is not ready to deal with all that comes with being in the public spotlight then maybe she should retreat back to the rock from which she crawled from under and re-evaluate her career path. As for Beyonce, great way to seize an opportunity to make yourself look good. She handled that situation like a champ. For Mr. Kanye West, keep being the bad guy and shaking things up, this industry needs it!

Shaun, I absolutely positively don't think the Janet Jackson thing was scripted. She was supposed to have a pasty on that didn't work out. I don't think the Taylor Hicks issue was scripted. There are some publicity stunts that do work, but this was one that Kanye went into hiding on. And if you don't give me my inch back we're going to have some words!

5'2, I expected you to take this too far but I'm still amazed that you do. If we brought or not supported someone by something he or she has done then no one would buy/sell or support anything. Everybody messes up or takes things too far, that is just human. Ashamed that he is from Chicago? Are you serious? People take his comment waaaaaayyyy to far and do not understand that it was a scripted comment, a pawn move in the chess game of the music industry. Its like that Justin timerblake/Janet Jackson wardrobe Superbowl Thing. It was scripted but when the fans didnt respond how the powers that be thought they would then the white boy let the black girl take all the blame for it. Same thing here.

Shaun, you assume that nobody knew Taylor by saying it did more for her. She was already doing it big. I knew her already, and her songs were being played to death on pop stations. Kanye West didn't help her obviously. Hell, she won the award. Folks knew her. I actually have no intentions of buying his next album BECAUSE of what he did. He's forever telling people to leave him alone and stop criticizing him but then he does stuff like say "My name is Dr. Martin Luther Louis Vuitton King Jr., call me as such." Just EXTRA. I had an ex tell me he is embarrassed that Kanye is from Chicago. I am too. I promise you he is not a representation of how the average Chicago man is. He's just on another level.

I dont agree with his statement of the greatest video of all time I just feel like everyone is making a bog deal out of nothing. If you look at the aftermath, it actually did more for Taylor and Beyonce and Taylor should stop milking it and man up!

"Kanye West did everything right and nothing wrong -- at all." You sound as crazy as he sounded. I could maybe understand his actions a little bit if Beyonce made an historic, unbelievable video. But "Single Ladies"? "The greatest video of all time"? Kanye's too smart to be such an idiot.

Christopher, thank you for your comments but I disagree with you and that i the way it is. Im not trying to get anything started but it is the way it is. You and I look at the situation differently, you look at it with a closed mind and I look at it on a deeper level. If we as people were not so damn easily offended a lot of things such as this one would seem like such a big deal.

The only good that could come out of this is if him and Taylor do a project together, but everyone already adores her, just that the rest of us sympathize for her but she was already on the right track. You make it sound as though no one had ever heard of her; Kanye did her no favors whatsoever.

Just because everyone knows how to pick up the pieces that does not excuse Kanye's collateral damage. Beyonce is a professional with the media, an old pro; Kanye did her no favors at all. She was already in good and will stay there until SHE is ready to leave. I'm no fan of hers, but it is what it is and she learned from the best, Jay-Z himself.

You're always trying to get some s* started. Kanye West was not only wrong, but should be thrown underneath the bus for his actions. The girl was still a f* teenager. and * Beyonce, seriously. She was more of a woman than he was a gentleman though, and did the right thing. You have to be f* kidding me with this bs.
