Kanye West and Russell Simmons at Occupy Wall Street
Celebrities Are Starting to Make Appearances at Occupy Wall Street
You knew it had to happen. Most were upset that these two showed up because they represent the mainstream and all of the oppressing forces that Occupy Wall Street represents. Kanye in particular (because I don't think Russell Simmons himself represents consciousness) should have stayed for a minute or gave an empowering speech. It would have legitimized his presence.
Instead Russell Simmons had to speak for Kanye West. He kept telling the videographer that he just wanted to show his support to the movement. To paraphrase Russell Simmons; Kanye is not a politician, Kanye just wanted to show his spiritual support for the movement.
It was a very awkward moment. Kanye West walks in with gold chains, and an unbuttoned lumberjack shirt. He doesn't say anything to the people. It is unfortunate, because it is a lot easier to speak your mind when you are part of the mainstream media to the public but extremely difficult to speak to independent media as a mainstream, public figure, to that same public.
I am not sure that Occupy Wall Street needs celebrities to make appearances to legitimize their movement. It is interesting, and it is newsworthy, but it has nothing to do with the movement. Celebrities are part of the one percent that Occupy Wall Street is protesting. They used the same instruments of the one percent to get to where they are at. At least Kanye West had the nerve to get out there; but knowing Kanye West, it will be interesting to see how this is spun in the media. It will also be interesting to see how Kanye West handles reporters who may talk to him about this in the near future if he does indeed decide to do any interviews.

Post a CommentRead with a smile: Kanye West with all his gold chains entering Occupy camp, not saying a word. It reminds me a little of Tahrir Square, Cairo, during the February revolution earlier this year, when celebrities as Tamr Hosny or Ehab Tawfik made their appearance, making clumsy remarks. @HM
You're not a fan of Kanye, I guess;))
