Kanye's Twitter Joke Falls Flat

Valerie Ferrari
Many of us learn on the internet that a wry sense of humor often does not translate and rapper, Kanye West, is no exception, as he found out on January 14th when he joked on Twitter about coming in second to Britney Spears. Kanye and Jay-Z's new single "H.A.M." is second right after Britney's latest, "Hold It Against Me."

It seemed like Kanye was trying to show that he has progressed to the place where even he can laugh at his mistakes as he tweeted Britney, in a play on the infamous Taylor Swift incident: "Yo Britney, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time!"

Britney Spears' fans took it way too seriously and when Kanye realized it, he promptly deleted the tweet and reposted it with an "LOL" at the end to signify that he was only joking. The negative backlash continued all the same with even Britney's manager, Adam Leber, tweeting: "Thanks for 'letting' us be #1. Much appreciated." Another pop princess, Avril Lavigne, managed to get in a plug for her own new release, tweeting: "Yo @KanyeWest I'm really happy for U and I'mma lovin you at #2, and @BritneySpears at #1, but What The Hell all the way! :) haha! xoxo."

Kanye gave up and deleted even the LOL version finally, although he made an effort to show again he was not really being an egotistical jerk, as he is often accused of being: "On a serious note I'm truly happy for @AvrilLavigne and @BritneySpears ... No hate in 2011! I thought LOL signified a joke ... I didn't get the 2011 LOL doesn't signify a joke anymore memo ... LOL or something else I guess." He then deleted all January 14 tweets, but he's still got this one retweet up there from the day before with a link to a Jimmy Kimmel Live! youtube joke called "Josh Groban Sings Kanye West Tweets." LOL, if I dare say so myself.

I think Kanye really means no more hate in 2011. Today he tweeted: H*A*M #2 on ITunes... THANK YOU!!!"

Haven't heard these songs yet?

Find out what H.A.M. stands for if you want, and listen to the seriously profane musical offering (that was a warning label, sort of) here.

You soar above your topix, Val. And that's no H.A.M.

He should stop talking and just stick to singing!

Good piece, but how can you follow this nonsense without the economy-sized bottle of ibuprofen? The further descent into dribbling mass stupidity: How could anyone miss that West was joking? I mean, first of all, he's a genius (just ask him), and geniuses are always being LOL hilarious.
