Karl Lagerfeld Says Adele is 'A Little Too Fat': A Look at Why Lagerfeld Owes the Singer and Women Everywhere an Apology
Some people have real nerve judging others in such a public light, when a look in their own mirror is due. On February 8, 2012, CBS News reported that Karl Lagerfeld made the ultimate judgment on singer Adele by remarking, "The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice." As a fan of Adele, and as a person, I feel that Karl Lagerfeld's remarks were insensitive, inflammatory and I firmly believe that he owes the singer a heartfelt apology.
Look in the mirror, much?
Karl Lagerfeld should look back at some of his old photo albums because he wasn't always so svelte himself. Has he forgotten about his own struggle with weight loss? Adele has the voice of an angel, the face of a goddess and the personality of a friendly young woman. Why then is her size so important to the likes of Karl Lagerfeld? This is not the first time Lagerfeld has spoken publicly against curvaceous women. It appears that people such as Lagerfeld need to get back in touch with their softer side, and stop looking for the wrong in others.
Why the Focus on Body Image?
When Adele goes up on stage, she is not scantily clad. She aims to go on stage and wow her audiences with her golden voice. She is not attempting to being alluring or sexy. She typically looks quite beautiful as she performs on stage, but it is clear that she does not adhere to the typical "sex sells" motto of the music business. If anything, Adele's refusal to follow the rules is refreshing.
Pot, Kettle Black
To end one Adele fan's tirade against body image prejudice, I urge readers to listen to the lyrics of Tilly and Wall's "Pot, Kettle Black." If I were in Adele's position, I'd dedicate this song to all the naysayers and haters of the world. Adele is perfect as she is; let her be praised for her beautiful craft, stunning face and welcoming personality.
