Karl Rove Being Investigated for Possible Violations of Hatch Act

Regina Sass
Karl Rove is being investigated by The Office of Special Counsel for possible violations of the Hatch Act. The Hatch Act was enacted in 1939 and its purpose is to protect Federal Employees from political coercion. Basically the Hatch Act forbids any Federal, or DC employee from using their official authority or influence to interfere with an election, soliciting or discouraging political activity of anyone with business before their agency, soliciting or receiving political contributions (may be done in certain limited situations by federal labor or other employee organizations) be candidates for public office in partisan elections, engage in political activity while: on duty or in a government office or wearing an official uniform or using a government vehicle and wearing any partisan political buttons while on duty.

The investigation was started when employees of the General Services Administration filed complaints stating that Karl Rove and/or other White House officials violated the Hatch Act by encouraging them to support Republican Candidates in the last, off year election.

If Karl Rove or any other official is found to have violated the Hatch Act, the General Services Administration does not have the power to bring charges, however they do have the power to issue subpoenas. They can also recommend disciplinary action, including termination.

This is the same agency that is investigating the use and disappearance of White House e- mails and the firing of a U.S. attorney in New Mexico.

The White House is standing by Rove, insisting that all political activity was carried out in accordance with the Hatch Act. The Office of Special Council is headed by Scott J. Bloch, a supporter of the Bush administration. As a matter of fact, he was appointed to this post by President Bush in 2003. He has many years experience in the legal field and as well respected by his colleagues. In addition to enforcing the Hatch Act, the Office of Special Council is in charge of Whistleblower Protection, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (Veterans' Rights) and Employee Information Programs.

When asked about his support of President Bush in the last two Presidential Elections, and whether or not it would affect his ability to pursue the investigation impartially, he responded by saying "We are an independent federal agency. Anyone who knows me and knows my performance here in the job knows we have obtained corrective action for many individuals who have been aggrieved in the federal government. "

So, who do we vote for in 2008?

WOW! This is a heated debate. One that I will stay out of. I think the article is written very well!

Hey Bob P.- Take the challenge bud. Enlighten us all with some facts.

What a naive fool you are if you believe either party (especially yours) is not lying half the time to protect some political interest. Are you a bible thumper Bob?
You're simply blind my friend. If Duh-bya decided to nuke Montana, you and Rush Limbaugh would come up with a way to defend him. People like you can't think for yourselves - so you accuse those who don't think like you do (guess what?) of not being able to think for themselves. It's a Republican thing. Kinda like hiding behind the bible so the Religious Right will vote for you, then laughing behind their backs at what fools they are while you squander billions and give your rich buddies huge contracts and tax breaks. Bob, you're either rich or terribly stupid. People who are too far to the right OR the left are idiots. The vo

This is a smokescreen investigation, trying to insulate Rove from anyone who might actually look at what he has done...essentially trying to corrupt the American political system into a christo-fascist state dominated by neo-cons.

Sarah: I assume you are young and spend your time on MySpace and/or YouTube. It's understandable how the young and some of the older peeps are totally in the dark when they get their facts from Moveon.org and the other propaganda machines. If you spent some time actually researching the facts rather than accepting the spoon-feeding you are getting from disreputable sources, you would abandon your tired, worn-out Lib rhetoric and see the truth. Why do you defend the despicable idiots in the Dem party? Is that all you can say is "the Bushie" and his "lies"? How sad and pathetic. Grow up, think on your own and stop listening to the mass media and their propaganda.

Next time could you find another picture? Even accidentally seeing Rove's fat face for a few seconds always makes me sick to my stomach.

  • Sarah E Leach4/25/2007

Bob P. & Ranger how can you be so blind to the world and the things that go on in this country? I guess you are two of the 30% that still believe the lies the Bushie spewed.

Down with MC Rove! Worst rapper ever! LOL

If he's guilty as charged by the Dem's continued lynching of Repubs, then he should pay the price. On the other hand, it is stupefying to think that these same people had no problem with Sandy Berger stealing and then destroying highly classified documents from the National Archives. Evidence that would have supported the premise that Clinton had Bin Laden in the cross-hairs and failed to do so. I will tell you this: if any other Fed employee, or worse yet, a military member, had done the same thing that Berger did, they would be cracking rocks at Leavenworth Penitentiary. The Dem's (read: Pelousy and Reid) hypocrisy is suffocating, particularly when she said "we are taking this country in a new direction". She and the other thugs surely are...

No one ever brought himself up by tearing another person down. I know people in the White House personally, they are scrupulous in obeying the law. You won't find Karl with $90,000.00 stashed in his freezer, or laundering campaign cash through a Buddist Temple. This is typical Democrat Washington political sniping. If the Bush Administration were into using prosecutions as a political tool, the recent trips of Ried and Pelosi to meet with our enemies would easily qualify for investigations.
