Karma: Fact or Fiction?

Kevin Nurmi
We all have heard the saying, "What goes around comes around" and "What you send out will come back to you three fold." These sayings are part of what karma is. Many people believe deeply in karma as the universal or cosmic justice system. Others believe that people use karma to explain things that happen that can't be explained. Looking at karma from both sides of this issue will help you figure out if karma is fact or fiction.

Many religions hold that karma is a cosmic energy that is both positive and negative. Karma is directed by a person's actions and words. Basically how a person lives their life it is said to affect their karma. Those who believe in karma describe karma as a wheel, circle, or a cycle. How the cycle works is it starts with the person and the energy they send out and whether it is positive or negative. Like any cycle, the energy that is sent out comes back around to the person. But energy, whether it is positive or negative, comes back to that person three times more powerful then when it was released. This is where the belief in the justice system of karma comes in. Those who send out negative energy will receive equal justice when the energy returns to them.

Another belief with karma is that it holds the universe in balance. Part of the balance is comic punishment for wrongs committed and good fortune for those who have lived their lives with positive energy. It is also believed that karma and reincarnation are held closely together. When a person dies, their unused karma is still out there waiting to finish its process. The soul is then reborn into another, and the past karma is attached and can finish completing it circle.

Just like with any subject that involves beliefs and things that cannot be seen by our eyes or touched by our hands, there are those who believe that karma is just away of explaining about when bad things happen to people. It is a normal basic human reaction; the desire to find some reason for when bad things happen to people. This is where some people use the idea of karma. They may not believe in it completely, but it allows them to come to terms with what they see.

The determination of whether karma is fact or fiction comes down to a matter of faith and belief. This matter comes down to one basic element, and that is a choice to believe in karma.
