Kate Gosselin - Diva Supreme or Mother of the Year?

My Take on the Drama

Rodney Southern
Kate Gosselin, the former star of Jon and Kate Plus 8, is now all over your internet, television and magazine covers across the country. Some label her as the mother of the year, while others say she is a mother in absentee. Kate says she is not fond of the media, and that she is only doing all of this for her kids. What is the truth about Kate Gosselin? That is hard to say without being inside of her head. The facts are all we have to go by. Here are some things that might highlight an answer for us all:

1. The fact that Kate Gosselin says this is only for her kids is a joke. The reason? Common sense. Money is no longer an issue to Kate Gosselin and her kids. She has made tons of cash. The bottom line is that she is doing this for attention and stardom. What part of going on the Today show and trashing her husband is for her kids? Kate has repeatedly bashed Jon every chance she gets. She even brought up the custody battle on Dancing with the Stars. Her kids see all of that, so how is she helping them?

Disclaimer - I feel the same way about her husband, Jon. This is not only a Kate thing.

2. Being a "mother of the year" candidate means spending time with your kids. All sources say that Kate has nannies that are taking care of the kids while she is out days at the time. This is her right to do so, but she can not then turn around and play the "poor victim who is trying only to think of her kids" afterwards. Kate has every right to star in television and film, write books and anything else she wishes to do. She does not have the right to try to use her kids as the only reason for doing so when she is clearly seeking much of the attention by putting herself in those situations.

3. Her behavior on Dancing with the Stars has been deplorable at best. Truthfully, many of the pros would have walked out permanently with all of her diva moments. She is lucky she got Tony. Even he has been ready to quit with her and it has nothing to do with her lack of dancing talent. How exactly is that helping her kids or teaching them anything positive?

4. The focus of her life is not on the kids as it once was. I used to feel that Kate was the victim in this whole drama. Now I am not so sure. I remember all the old episodes of Jon and Kate, and her ramblings about how she just wanted to be out of the spotlight. She felt then that it was unhealthy for her kids. What exactly is she doing now? Kate is not the same woman she was years ago - at least based on her own words back then.

So what is the answer? Is Kate mother of the year, or Diva supreme? My guess is she is somewhere in between. More likely, she is a person that is caught up in Hollywood fame and unsure of how to move forward. My suggestion to Kate would be to go back to the early days and listen to her own advice. She might be enlightened once again as to what is really important....those kids.

I feel bad for those kids. They started out potentially having a relatively normal life and upbringing; now their parents have both gone off and engaged in their own selfish identity crises. These were just average middle class people from Pennsylvania, and fame has not done them any favors.

I have to say I agree with you - her behavior does NOT present the picture of a loving and stable mother in my opinion.

I fear some day we will hear about the Gosselin kids and all the trouble their getting into because they've had no strong parental influence. Good piece.
