As speculated here upon Melissa Reeves return to Days of Our Lives, Jennifer Horton and Jack Devereaux's daughter, Abby (Abigail) Devereaux is set to return to Salem.

Kate Mansi, a newcomer to daytime soaps has been cast as Abigail Devereaux, Jack and Jennifer's oldest child. The character was last played by Ashley Benson (from 2002 to 2007), who is now seen on ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars.

When Abby left Salem three years ago, Abby Devereuax was a college student, who was a little on the prissy side of sweet. The character never seemed to gain any real storyline traction of her own, instead reacting to the lives of those around her, most notably, her parents, Jack and Jennifer.

Abby has always been close to her father, despite his predilection for being either "dead" or "dying" (Hodgkin's disease, victim of the Salem Stalker, washed down a river, and a mystery disease Frankie Brady helped cure him of). Her relationship with her mother, Jennifer has been more strained usually because Jennifer has had the audacity to move on with her life (Peter Blake, Colin Murphy, Frankie Brady) when Jack was either presumed dead, or during one of his many disappearances.

Abby also played second fiddle to her best friend, Chelsea Brady, Bo and Billie's wild-child daughter who was anything but a good influence on Abby, involving Abby in many of her questionable schemes.

Abby's love life is also a blank slate. During her last stint in Salem she dated Josh, and before her departure from Salem had a brief flirtation with Max Brady, which to most was a far preferable pairing than with his nieces, Stephanie and Chelsea, with whom Max eventually left Salem. (To be fair Max was an adopted Brady, so he was not blood related to Chelsea or Stephanie, but the "ick" factor was still there for some).

Though the character of Abby Devereaux is well known to Days of Our Lives, she returns to Salem with an innocuous backstory giving writer's a blank slate. The character's return also bolsters Horton family numbers with recent announcement of the departure of Nathan Horton.

Lets' hope Abby is given more to do than whine over her mother's latest boyfriend, manipulate a reunion between Jack and Jennifer, and be the voice of reason to whoever is deemed to be her new best friend and confident.

Catch Abby Devereaux's return to Days of Our Lives on February 16, 2011. Days of Our Lives screens weekdays on NBC, at 1pm in most markets.
