Kate, Prince William Wedding Details Emerge

How Will This Wedding Compare to Prince Charles, Princess Diana Wedding?

The office of Prince William's father, Prince Charles Prince of Wales, has released new details for the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. How will the Kate & Prince William wedding compare to the Charles and Princess Diana wedding?

Wedding Date and Day

Kate & Prince William will wed on April 29, 2011, a Friday, at 11 a.m.

Princess Diana & Prince Charles wed on July 29, a Wednesday, at 11:20 a.m.

Wedding Location

Kate & Prince William will wed at London's Westminster Abbey.

Princess Diana & Charles wed at London's St Paul's Cathedral. Charles and Diana chose St Paul's because it offered more seating than the more popular Westminster Abbey, as well as a longer procession route from Buckingham Palace to the church.

The Transportation

Kate Middleton will depart from tradition by arriving at Westminster Abbey via car. Her route will pass London's Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

Princess Diana famously arrived at St Paul's via glass coach, emerging slowly with her 25-foot train trailing behind her. Viewers eyed the crumpled train with concern - would the wrinkles shake out?

After the Wedding

Kate & Prince William will give onlookers a chance to see them better after the wedding, when they will retrace Kate's journey to St Paul's, but this time in a carriage procession.

Charles and Princess Diana also returned to Buckingham Palace after their wedding in a carriage, much to the delight of the adoring crowds.

Wedding Reception

Queen Elizabeth will host a reception for the newly-married couple at Buckingham Palace following the wedding. Selected wedding guests will be invited.

The Queen also hosted a reception for Charles and Diana following their wedding; dinner was served to 120 guests.

Wedding Kiss?

Charles and Diana famously kissed for the first time publicly during at appearance after their wedding on a Buckingham Palace balcony. The kiss delighted crowds who were not accustomed to such displays of affection from the reserved royals.

Will William and Kate kiss on the same balcony? Chances are good that they will. They are scheduled to appear on the balcony, and in today's less formal environment it would be surprising if they didn't kiss.

The Dress

London designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel made Princess Diana's wedding dress.

Kate's dress details are being kept secret and the designer has not yet been revealed.

Yay, I can leave a comment today! I love hearing about the wedding. I am currently reading a book (an old one) written by Prince Charles' valet, Stephen Barry. I hope Prince William's marriage turns out happier than his parents did.

Where's my invitation to the wedding?? Susan, I noticed your efforts to sign in to my article, and you had to do it as a guest. This is good info for anyone it's happening to: I'm finding these days that we need to sign in 2 or 3 times before it takes! What I'm doing is copying the URL I want to comment on, then signing in, then going back to the URL on the same screen I just signed in on. But I hope they fix this.
