Kate Winslet Jennifer Aniston: Celebrity Hairstyles 2011

Hollywood's Celebrity Haircut Craze 2011

Allison West
I was delighted to see Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet gracing the cover of the April 2011 Glamour Magazine when my issue arrived in the mail a few weeks ago. The Kate Winslet cover and feature story showed Winslet wearing a variety of sexy fashions as well as long flowing hair and sultry makeup. I was impressed by Kate Winslet's sexy style and thought the actress never looked better.

That was before her recent extreme celebrity haircut, which shows the world an entirely new Kate Winslet. 2011 has seen a celebrity haircut craze, with everyone from Kate Winslet to Jennifer Aniston to singer Justin Bieber jumping on the bandwagon. Stars are eager to switch up their look (and gain some press) by lopping off their signature locks in an attempt to reinvent themselves, but which celebrity hairstyles got it right and who shouldn't have touched their tresses? I weigh in on a few of the latest celebrity hairstyles for spring.

Celebrity Hairstyles #1: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet is perhaps the most glaring misfire in the celebrity haircut craze sweeping through show business in the past few weeks. Winslet is a very beautiful woman, and she has been a spokes model for Tresor fragrances by Lancome; however, her recent celebrity hairstyle does not flatter her features.

Kate Winslet recently chopped off her sensuous, flowing honey-blonde locks and dyed her hair a platinum blonde shade, and she shows off her new look on the cover of the April 2011 British Vogue magazine. I was aghast at the sight of "new" Kate Winslet, and initially mistook her for Gwen Stefani! In my opinion, Kate Winslet is more of a classic beauty, and maybe her "Sense and Sensibility" role is still stuck in my head, but I feel that a softer, more romantic and feminine look suits her better than the tough, masculine and almost futuristic look she sports in British Vogue.

Celebrity Hairstyles #2: Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston's famous celebrity hairstyle called the "Rachel" (based on her popular character from the long running television comedy "Friends") made her a sensation and a household name. Many women asked their stylists to replicate the Rachel celebrity haircut, until Jennifer Aniston became so sick of being a celebrity hairstyle icon that she stopped sporting that look.

Despite her uneven box office performance, Aniston is still an A-Lister in Hollywood and a style icon but her hair doesn't seem to attract that much of a fanatical following anymore. In fact, it's been a long time since Jennifer Aniston made any changes to her sleek, classic style. Perhaps to ignite some excitement reminiscent of the old "Rachel" days, Aniston has cut her locks into a shorter, more elegant celebrity hairstyle. I've seen some photos and I believe her new, sophisticated "bob" haircut helps Jennifer Aniston, now in her forties, continue her transition away from "Friends" fame. This Aniston celebrity haircut is a winner and should help the actress evolve toward a new image in Hollywood and meatier, more mature acting roles.

Celebrity Hairstyles #3: Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens rose to fame as a Disney performer, and she'll probably be forever associated with her role in the teen sensation "High School Musical." Hudgens's signature look involved masses of long dark hair that gave her a more youthful appearance. Looking at photos of the 2011 Academy Awards after parties, I was astonished to see a different Vanessa Hudgens dancing the night away during the Elton John bash.

Hudgens lopped off a considerable amount of her trademark lush curls, wearing a wavy bob that is a bit longer and curlier than Jennifer Aniston's new celebrity haircut. Vanessa Hudgens completed her Oscars look by donning sexy strappy high heels, hot red lipstick and a short silver dress, making her appear years older than her "High School Musical" days. I have mixed feelings about the new Vanessa Hudgens celebrity hairstyle: on the one hand, it's good for teen stars to eventually evolve their image into a more grown up look; however, Hudgens's celebrity hairstyle seems so sophisticated, and she shouldn't run the risk of growing up too fast.

Celebrity Hairstyles #4: Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is one of the most popular singers in the world, and he has a huge and devoted fan following, but one of his biggest trademarks was also a source of derision: his unusual celebrity haircut. Justin Bieber had his fans swooning, but detractors couldn't help but poke fun at his ridiculous looking celebrity haircut, a severe bowl shaped hairdo that had critics comparing him with singer Anne Murray!

The Biebs got with the program and in spring 2011, he decided to do something with his trademark hair. I'm not a Bieber fan or follower, and even though I'm almost totally oblivious to Justin Bieber, even I had to take note of the remarkable improvement in his celebrity hairstyle. The new, and much shorter, Justin Bieber celebrity haircut does away with the bowl-like shape of his earlier look; the layering accentuates his features and allows the audience to see more of Bieber's face.

Aniston's new look will help her transition from sitcom and romantic comedy queen to serious movie star, and Justin Bieber's polished and mature celebrity hairstyle will help him make the leap from teeny bopper to adult performer. Aniston and Bieber won't be the only stars taking scissors to their locks this year; in 2011, we're sure to see a crop of stars hoping to change their images and generate lots of buzz by wearing new celebrity hairstyles.
