Kate Winslet Voted Most Desirable Celebrity Body, Defeating the Stick Figures

So...Can We Eat Now?

Kate Winslet was voted Most Desirable Celebrity Body in a recent poll, as reported at Mail Online. Kate Winslet, Halle Berry and Beyonce scored high on the poll, while skinny celebrities such as Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham did not score high.

Curvy celebrities are good news for the average woman

Society is bombarded with images of celebrity women and these celebrities, whether the images are natural or airbrushed, are primarily of thin women. Rarely is a heavy actress paraded on the cover of a magazine. Although Fruit of the Loom and Dove have presented a "real women" campaign showing women who are full figured, the efforts by these companies are the exception rather than the rule. As reported at Ince-Aweigh.com, the average American woman is 5'4" and 140 pounds. The average American model is 5' 11" and 117 pounds. Only two percent of American women are as thin as fashion models. In an American society filled with food that is high in fat and caloric content, it's not surprising to find that four out of five American woman are dissatisfied with the way they look.

The look of American women has changed over the years. While Marilyn Monroe of the 50's represented curves, the Twiggy's of the 60's and the "heroin chics" of the 90's did not. Though not every woman is starving her body, many beat themselves up on a daily basis.

Kate Winslet was voted the Most Desirable Celebrity Body; Will 2010 allow for healthier images of women?

Stars like Tyra Banks and Kate Winslet have been vocal about Hollywood's standards for female celebrities and their aversion to starving themselves. Says Kate Winslet, "I will not starve myself, as we all know. I just won't be anything that other people necessarily expect for me to be, and I'll just be myself." As more personalities rebel against society's impossible standards, it helps a population of women who are not a size zero.

Will 2010 allow for healthier images of women? The fix is not that easy. As more positive images of women are shown, the usual images continue to be shown. While some may have felt that Valerie Bertinelli was a healthy weight before, she is better perceived in a bikini for a weight loss commercial. The only way these types of images can be good for women is when women learn that healthy eating along with a reasonable body weight should be the goal.

I am glad that curvy Kate Winslet was voted "Best Celebrity Body".She isn't really skinny,so that's a good indication that we are progressing to think that beauty isn't just about being ultra-thin.But what I find quite disturbing is that high fashion models(including Victoria's Secret Angels) are still far too thin.I believe that this ought to change as more people are trying to starve themselves to be ultra-thin .

P.S.Kate Winslet can model for Victoria's Secret as she can rock it!

I have to agree that if your are not stick like and you'r bones arent purtruding from your body that. It actually hurts to do the deed...Well hey props to Kate, for not becoming like the rest...Luvs for the curvy ladies

It's nice that Kate is getting recognition for just being herself and not falling into the stick figure trap.

Yeah, I know Rick. I know the concern of fashion designers - which contributes to the lack of self-image of American women. ALL of it is a problem.

While it's easy to sympathize here, the problem is that your writing about the wrong problem from a fashion designer's point of view. His/her concern is NOT the self-image of American woman, but the body that he/she feels shows off a design best...but nicely written.

An article like this helps me, too. I'm not fat or even close to it, but I beat myself up all the time. I'm trying to be a stick figure and that's not good for me.

all I can say is oh thank God, finally curves are in again...lol

  • Peter Flom1/1/2010

    Kate Winslett is gorgeous.
I think women should have curves. I think Jennifer Garner is even more gorgeous than Kate. She also has curves.

Good for her...I enjoy it when these celebrities rebel against the impossible Hollywood image.
