Kate Winslet Wins Twice at Golden Globe Awards

"Revolutionary Road" Actress Steals Show with Acceptance Speech

It seemed like only a few weeks ago that Kate Winslet was in a tirade over speculation that her nude photos in Vanity Fair had been airbrushed. How far the world has come in the intervening days to Kate Winslet breathlessly receiving her two - yes, two - Golden Globe Awards at the 66th annual event in Los Angeles on January 11.

Kate Winslet showed up on the red carpet with Leonardo DiCaprio on her arm (or was that the other way around?), himself nominated for his eighth Golden Globe Award Best Actor for "Revolutionary Road," in which he co-starred with Winslet. He won the 2005 Best Actor Golden Globe Award for "The Aviator."

The two are said to be the best of friends. Kate Winslet is married to Sam Mendes, the director of "Revolutionary Road," the acclaimed movie for which she, DiCaprio, Mendes, and the movie itself had received Golden Globe Awards nominations.

Winslet was the only one to walk away with an award, though. And it was her second of the night.

Earlier, Winslet walked up to the stage to accept the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Reader."

According to the Telegraph, some are already comparing her second acceptance speech - for Best Actress - to other famous visibly overwhelmed and histrionic acceptance speeches (remember Sally Field at the Academy Awards, Gwyeth Paltrow?) of the past. Wiping away tears, the 33-year-old actress gushed, "You'll have to forgive me. I have a habit of not winning things."

Winslet would ramble for a few seconds, pause to catch her breath, then mutter, "Gather," a self-directed English expression that simply means "to settle down."

When she began to thank people, she first apologized to her competition, blurting out the names of the other Golden Globe Awards contenders for Best Actress -- briefly forgetting one. "I'm so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin - oh God, who's the other one... Angelina!"

And for her "Revolutionary Road" co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, she had words of love. "Leo, I'm so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you and how much I've loved you for 13 years, and your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular. I love you with all my heart, I really do."

A little over-the-top, perhaps, but Kate Winslet had been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards in the past, including a Best Actress nod for 1996's "Titanic," where she first starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. An understanding crowd of A-list actors applauded and laughed along with the visibly flustered actress.

The Golden Globe Awards are voted on and presented annually by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press association. They are considered key indicators of who and what in the movie industry will be nominated for the Academy Awards, which will be announced next week.
