Katharine McPhee in the Bottom Three of American Idol - 3/29/06 : The "McFever" Seems to Be Breaking
Her contender was Bucky Covington, a Southern Hick, who flinches and holds his microphone like a hot potato. Something inside me still thought it would be Katherine, despite her powerful voice, nickname, and flawless skin.
There's no denying that Katharine's' got a great voice. She's also beautiful, and extremely poised. But there's one small problem. She's too poised. It's come to the point where she seems so self-assured, so unbreakable, that she's become almost…sorry men…unlikable. For the very reason Ayla Brown left us early-Ayla, a basketball playing, senator's daughter was just too privileged to keep a fan base.
One of the dreams of American Idol is that they can turn a nobody into a mega superstar. Someone like Ayla or Katharine just doesn't need it. Or Lisa Tucker, who actually got voted off last night. Lisa was born singing, had been on Star Search when she was 13. Katharine's mom was a music teacher. How's that for a stretch.
Katherine seemed genuinely shocked that she was in the bottom three. She was thinking she was better than the other contestants sitting on the couch. "This is a new place for me. But whatever God wants for me." What about the voters? She couldn't mention them or thank them. They are starting to see right through her. Katharine's response to being in the bottom three might hurt her as well. She looked so shocked and uncomfortable that it only reinforces her ultra-deserving attitude.
When she made it to the finals she kissed all three judges on the lips.
Sweet? I found it to be awkward. And it made me wonder whom she was kissing during her off time. Or whom she'd kiss to make it to the top. Two weeks ago, she looked stunning in a silver dress, with a new tan, and new hair. But her fan base is 10 year-old girls. They're much more likely to relate to someone "cute" like Paris Bennett or Kelly Pickler, not someone trying to become a sex-symbol. Katharine's fan base will slowly but surely become men. But are 20-year-old men voting? She's going to have to find a way to find herself, before she'll find America supporting her all the way to the top.

Notice that Kat now seems resolved to be leaving. She is showing her humble side. She is the one with the voice, the poise, the one that should be the American Idol. Have you ever notice how much like Paula she is?
katharine probably is not the best vocal in the competition but she can sing, as you said she's very poised, and she is a very pretty lady. and my daughters and I really admire her, so we're supporting her. (coming from a 35 yr old mom)-Ameleen
