To quote Griffin herself Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Live, "Time to kick the kids out! This isn't the Lion King." From the moment she ran across the stage, I don't think I've ever seen her walk through an entrance, her explicit greeting to the crowd was evidence enough this wasn't going to be a "G" rated evening. But what else could we expect? This is Kathy Griffin after all. She bound effortlessly across the stage ready to '˜take down,' all the celebrities she could in her two hour show. She wasted no time. After all, "we have so much to talk about tonight and we're going hit them all!" That she did. She dropped the '˜F' bomb on EVERYBODY. I mean let's face it; the celebrity headlines today are full of ripe and juicy fruit ready for the picking. It is here that Griffin shines her brightest.
Starting out her gig with the infamous Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater, whom Griffin lovingly refers to as a '˜stewardess,' she plowed right into Levi Johnston. You know, Bristol Palin's baby's daddy (whose 15 minutes of fame is lasting way too long and is now getting his own reality show) with whom Griffin herself had a torrid love affair/romance with a few months back. Yeah, and if you believe that I got some great swamp land I can sell you really cheap. But the speculation that this was all just a publicity stunt is between you and me. I mean poor Kathy; she's still getting over the devastating break-up. My heart goes out to her, really. Well, maybe not. But it did make for some great moments during the show.
Other comedic gems centered around Lindsay Lohan (of course), The Housewives of New Jersey (Bravo TV Show), Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, Naomi Campbell, a few loving remarks about Lady Ga Ga (no really, she likes Ga Ga), Oprah and Gayle King, and of course she couldn't leave out her mother Maggie Griffin. Ninety years young with her box of wine and wisdom that is '˜drop on the floor hysterical'. Maggie has been a fan favorite since our first introduction. She's also one of the shining moments of '˜The D-List." The highlight or lowlight of the evening depending on how you view it were the quips and observations on Mel Gibson and Elisabeth Hasselbeck from '˜The View.' Now let's face it, Gibson is a given. He's got it all coming to him whether it is from Griffin or any other comedian/celebrity/person on the street. The tapes of his rantings alone are a comedian's goldmine. Hasselbeck is a whole other personal kettle of fish. If you were fortunate enough to see The View about a month ago you witnessed what could have been TV history. They came close to blows folks. Kathy was ready and armed, but even as Griffin notes when the confrontation happened on '˜live' TV, much of with Kathy herself was oblivious until the very end and finally woke up, EH backed down and '˜had nothing!' I myself was waiting for it as I sat on the edge of my living room sofa. Very anti-climatic to say the least. But Griffin with her own accomplished style took us through the events of the show and the stuff we didn't get to see on camera. I'm waiting for a re-match and my money's on Griffin.
The crowd for the show was a mixed group. Of course Griffin's '˜gays' as she lovingly calls them were in abundance, something she revels in. There were even some moment's for the '˜straight men,' in the audience. Griffin hit us all, covered everybody. As she freely stated, her show is definitely not the '˜Lion King.,' so leave the kids at home for this one. If you're a fan of Griffin you really need to see her in her element as a stand-up comedian. She doesn't get any better than this.
