The one hour program will have live entertainment, and according to standup2cancer.org, 50 of the top names off all time will be manning the phones as part of the live phone bank. Can you imagine talking personally to Morgan Freeman, Keanu Reeves, or even Toby McGuire?
The announcement was made live on the Today Show on May 28. This is was Katie Couric's first live appearance on the Today Show after leaving a few years ago to become Anchor on rival news station CBS.
As she said "I'm ba-ack," Couric's face lit up with excitement as she released information on her personal involvement in "Stand up for cancer" to fight cancer. It is no secret that Katie lost her husband Jay to cancer nearly a decade ago. Since then, she has been looking for an opportunity like this to help others beat this life threatening disease where it lives.
According to the interview held with Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, and Brian Williams, Cancer will affect one in two men and one in three women. these are staggering odds!
Another staggering fact: The Today show reports 1,500 people a day; one person every minute of everyday will die from some form of cancer.
You may be asking yourself "What can I do?" The Stand Up to Cancer project has a website you can go to. You can "Release a star" in the name of a loved one fighting cancer or honor a loved one who lost their battle against cancer for a small donation of $1.00 per star. The star becomes part of this beautiful constellation, a reminder of how this disease truly affects everyone worldwide in some form or another. You can become part of "The Stand" and also receive more information on the project, just by simply browsing the website.
Whatever you choose to do, little is much when we all come together. I decided to release a few stars; one for my fiancé's grandmother battling breast cancer, one of my dear friend Sabine in Germany now battling Leukemia, and one for my grandfather Lester, who lost his battle with prostate cancer in 2001. I also decided that 100% of the money i make from this article will be used to release other stars for those who cannot afford them. I hope that this article allows me to help others remember their loved ones in this manner. Lastly, I decided to get as many people involved in this as possible on Associated Content. I will be promotong this artcicle in the forums, so look out for it,
If just one person took the initiative in their town to get the word out on cancer prevention, education, and treatment, we would surely see a reduction of cancer deaths worldwide. Please help me further this cause by promoting this article to other websites via Myspace, Digg, Facebook, or what other means necessary.
