Katy Perry: Should She Kiss a Girl, E.T., Or Kanye West?

Wes Laurie
Katy Perry is not a musician you'll see me rushing down to the music store to buy a CD of music to support. What? They don't have CD stores anymore? Well, my refusal to join the I-tune times is not the reason why I avoid Katy Perry. Mostly it is because her songs are directed towards teen girls having sex with dudes and I'm an approaching thirty dude myself. On a talent level I'm curious as to whether or not she ever sounds good without lip singing to pre-recorded tracks or not; because I've heard some sad sounds come from her voice in the past, and then seen some performances where I assumed she was not really singing too much. I guess every time I've heard her sing bad was via television and who knows what technology did to ruin the performance in those instances. Maybe I should have crashed in on her "surprise" live performances in her hometown of Santa Barbara, where I reside as I write this, before being a harsh judge. She does have some things going for her though in my book and I'll point those out as I judge her latest music single: "E.T."

The Katy Perry song "E.T." is her best song since the scandalous "I Kissed A Girl" truly put her on the map. I am not a fan of "I Kissed A Girl" but it was an infectious tune and Perry's voice cracked in all the right places on the track. So, perhaps it was guilty pleasure candy unto my ears, though I did not seek the sugar out, merely enjoyed it somewhat when it was thrust unto me. "E.T." is a return to form in that sense. Her voice is hitting that attractive zone for me and the beat is infectious. I would almost go as far as to say "E.T." is better than the song "I Kissed A Girl." However, there is something/ someone holding the track back from perfection.

Kanye West ruins the Katy Perry song "E.T." Firstly, I am not a fan of his rap style, but mostly the lyrics he lazes out seem quite juvenile and steal any true emotion that one could have tapped into in a song called "E.T." Katy Perry brings the dramatics in her performance and then Kanye West poops over it talking about bars at mars and going to probe a girl, whatever. A beautiful moment ruined.

"E.T." currently replaces "I Kissed a Girl" as my favorite Katy Perry song, but that is not saying much as I do not willingly subject myself to Katy Perry songs in general. I do on occasion find her to be attractive enough to tune in to when it comes to television appearances, but then all of the female singers now are going all Marilyn Manson on us with their antics involving neon lights, meat dresses, and optical nudity illusions. They are creatively putting themselves into being cliché, which is what Kanye West threatens to do with the vibe of Katy Perry's song "E.T."

Good stuff Katy, but fly it solo next time.
