Katy Perry Video for "Sesame Street": Too Racy, or Too Lame Brained?

Katy Perry, the well known singer and songwriter, has made a video for Sesame Street, a children's show, that has been deemed to be far too racy for young children. Exactly what makes it so racy? Well, her cleavage showing while she does a duet with Elmo, the ever popular and lovable muppet. But enough parents complained about the racy video enough so that a Sesame Street spokesperson agreed that the video should be cut from the children's show. "Sesame Street" does after all have an excellent history of teaching not only math and spelling skills to children, but also teaching them about diversity. Crossing the border into sexuality, however, is one thing Sesame Street does not want to do if they want to maintain that wholesome, academic image to children. The last thing kids need to see is body parts hanging out that should be well concealed, something Katy's yellow dress does not do in the video. In fact, the actual dress is not something designed to really be worn for the video but rather something that would look better in a nightclub. And what is with that bridal veil that Katy is wearing? Personally I think it looks tacky. And the shot of her upper thighs in the video was totally unnecessary by all standards. Then there is the problem of Katy's mouth distorting all over the screen in the style of comedian Joe E. Lewis, while she is running down the street, chasing after Elmo. Then when they finally stop, Elmo says he was playing tag with her, and Katy gets a bizarre look of disbelief on her face. After viewing the video, it looks more stupid than racy. As if America's children need to be blowing away brain cells while watching this garbage.

As for Katy's voice - let's just say she is strongly lacking in the talent department here. Like so many other popular singers, she is much more a pretty face than anything else. And if she did write "Hot and Cold", the song she sang with Elmo, well, I'd have to say your average 5-year old "Sesame Street" viewer could do better in the songwriting area. This is not comparable to James Taylor (a real singer and songwriter, I might add, who is also respected for his talent) when he was on "Sesame Street" years ago. Exactly what was "Sesame Street" thinking when they first filmed that Katy Perry video? It almost seems like their brains were on vacation there. I suggest "Sesame Street" stay out of pop culture from now on and go back to helping children learn something worthwhile.
