KC Martial Arts Club Brings Taekwondo to the Urban Core

Putting the Karate Chop Back in KC

Having started his second year of teaching, Taekwondo Black Belt Mr. Ricky Pugh has continued focusing on teaching youth and adults alike in his dojang in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. With small class sizes, Mr. Pugh is able to pay particular attention to new arrivals while allowing upper ranks to focus on their own specific tasks. Kansas City Martial Arts Club offers three evening taekwondo classes per week. This is ideal for those that work and live in, or commute from, downtown Kansas City.

Each taekwondo class varies in activities performed, but the curriculum of the class includes forms, weapons, sparring, drills, achievement recognition, tournament training and much more. In the past year, long lasting friendships have been made, homeschoolers have found common interests and parents have formed bonds with other parents and children alike.

Many begin martial arts training with the goal of simply becoming more active and healthy. But the truth is, that through continuous training and practice with others, something much stronger takes place. The value of friendship in today's society is very underrated; with the advent of the email and cell phone, many friends only communicate through these very impersonal means. But contributing time and energy to your body, you can also develop lifelong friendships with those that you share something in common.

Taekwondo is translated to mean something similar to "the way of the hand and foot". Essentially, it is a way or path of a person's lifestyle that focuses solely on one's own body and enhancing one's capabilities. To become a martial artist is to transform ones self in ways that are defined differently by each individual practitioner. As a blue belt, I find that I am more fluid in my movements, more understanding of the new moves I am learning and able to teach others what I know. I am much more confident and aware. Having multiple classes per week allows me to focus more on the areas in which I need assistance and practice.

Taekwondo, and any martial art, is beneficial to all ages from the toddling one year old to the wise grandmother. There is something for everyone, and the challenging aspects are stimulus for growth no matter what the age. If you live in the Kansas City area, or commute to and from Kansas City on Mondays and Wednesdays, Kansas City Martial Arts Club invites you to come in for a free introductory class. For those that live near downtown Kansas City, taekwondo classes are also held on Sunday evening. It is never too late to focus on a healthier you, and if you don't take care of your body then who will?
