Keanu Reeves Starts to Switch Gears in Street Kings

Keanu Reeves is a little bit older and we are starting to see a different side of him. It is unlikely that we will ever see him go back to his Bill and Ted days, but the new Reeves is doing quite well as he settles into the adult drama roles. In case you haven't realized it, Keanu Reeves is over 40 now. His most recent roles are allowing him to keep his action fix, but are also allowing us to see that he has turned into a pretty good actor in the process.

He seems to be following in the path of Bruce Willis with his last two ventures: The Day the Earth Stood Still and Street Kings. Street Kings in particular was a very good movie for him. While he at times looks a little uncomfortable in the role, the movie is entertaining and paced perfectly. It is almost as if he has moments of both Neo and Johnny Utah as the same time. He plays a tough guy and you can see a lot more of the disgruntled, aging cop in his future.

Forest Whitaker plays his boss and overacts just a bit in this movie. When he does this, he takes Reeves along for the ride. Whitaker is often a highlight of just about any movie that he is involved in, but this role just did not seem to fit him. There are also a number of other actors that seem to be getting their feet wet in this genre that could have put up better performances.

Is this movie going to be one for the ages? No, but and Reeves fan will thoroughly enjoy it. He shows moments of brilliance right alongside of weakness. He seems to be an actor that feeds off of those that surround him and his best moments are alongside of other actors that are having great performances. The best scenes of the movie take place when Chris Evans and Reeves share the screen. Hopefully, we will see more of these two working together in future movies. All in all, an entertaining night at the movies.
