Kearny Komets vs. University City Centurions

MAY 31, 2000

Last week turned out to be a week of firsts for the University City baseball team. So, it shouldn't seem surprising that Centurion Greg First figured prominently in the events that transpired.

"We've never won a playoff game or even had a home playoff game in the history of the school," said coach Colin Cann before University City's meeting with Kearny in the first round of the C.I.F. Playoffs on May 23. Well, not only did the Centurions host the Komets, they throttled them, 10-3. When all was said and done, First was the winning pitcher in University City's first ever playoff victory.

The Centurions had jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but, in the top of the fourth inning, Kearny's Jason Lane led off with a single. The Komets' Mike Basham followed that up with a base hit of his own, putting runners at first and third, respectively.

That's when First was summoned to the mound to take over for University City starter Nathan Wampach. Wampach pitched well for the Centurions, going three innings and striking out three.

Despite striking out the first batter he faced, First was forced to watch as Lane came across to score before he could retire the side. Now down by two runs, at 4-2, Kearny would get no closer, as University City added six more runs to put the game out of reach.

First went three innings to get the win for the Centurions and improve his record to 5-3 overall. He struck out three batters, while allowing only one hit.

"Pitching and defense have carried this team all season," said Cann. "They're doing a good job on the mound. They've all worked real hard."

University City is also a team that features a top- notch double play combination. That would be shortstop Adrian Pimentel and second baseman Chris Woods.

"The two of them have turned numerous double plays," said Cann. "That's only going to help a pitcher lower his earned run average."

For the Centurions, this season has been a fun ride. There are six seniors on the team and five out of the six of them have been with the program for four years.

"The longer I coach the faster it goes by," said Cann. "These guys are getting an opportunity to do something not everyone gets to do. They're great kids. They get along with each other."

Don't look now, but, unfortunately, another season has indeed gone by for University City. The Centurions lost to La Jolla, 8-4, in the second round of the C.I.F. Playoffs last Thursday, May 25. With the loss, University City finishes its season with a 21-10 record.
