Keebler's Wheatables Snack Crackers

A Product Review

B. Hopkins
Wheatables are baked snack crackers from Keebler. Keebler, a division of the Kellogg's company, makes four Wheatables varieties including the original Golden Wheat, less fat Golden Wheat, toasted Honey Wheat and hearty Multigrain. The Wheatables snack cracker is a golden brown baked creation available on grocery store shelves in 9-ounce (255g) boxes.

What makes the Wheatables snack crackers different from other wheat crackers is its shape and buttery taste. The Wheatables are not the typical square wheat cracker like a Wheat Thin. Instead, this wheat cracker is about one inch (about 2.54cm) in length and about one half inch (about 1.27cm) wide. It has a wavy edge, reminiscent of a stalk of wheat blowing in the breeze. The cracker is thin and toasted brown in color. It is bumpy to the touch and appears to be speckled with the stone-ground wheat flour.

Keebler Wheatables snack crackers taste good. They have a crisp snap at first bite, but melt deliciously if held for a moment on your tongue. The less fat version is extremely flavorful for a reduced fat cracker. It tastes very similar to the original Golden Wheat Wheatables. The wheat flavor is not gritty or grainy and the cracker contains a pleasant buttery flavor that lingers after each bite. Each cracker is slightly sweet with just a hint of salt. Wheatables are not as salty as Wheat Thins. Their taste is similar to Kellogg's Special K multigrain snack crackers.

Wheatables are a good cracker for toppings. They pair well with a variety of cheeses, especially delicate, soft cheeses. Laughing Cow's spreadable light Swiss cheese tastes wonderful on the less fat Wheatables crackers. Wheatables also taste good when paired with dips like hummus or light ranch. Wheatables are also hearty enough to hold a tuna or chicken salad topping. This snack cracker can stand alone, too. It easily can be served in place of chips with a sandwich, burger or hot dog.

The original Golden Wheat Wheatables contain 140 calories and six grams of fat per serving, with 17 crackers equaling a serving. The less fat Golden Wheat Wheatables contain 140 calories and four grams of fat per serving, with 19 crackers equaling a serving. Neither the original nor less fat versions contain any cholesterol. Nineteen crackers is a nice-sized serving for an afternoon snack while working at desk or other similar task. Nineteen crackers can easily be portioned out into a snack baggie and carried in a purse or pocket for when the munchies hit. By topping the serving size with a light cheese or dipping it into a low-fat dip, Wheatables can be a healthier snack choice than a vending machine candy bar.

A box of Keebler Wheatables snack crackers retails for about $3 (U.S.) in most grocery stores. Prices will vary by region and store. Coupons can be found online sporadically. The box purchased for this review was purchased using a $1-off coupon found at CouponMom.com.

Golden Wheat Wheatables from Keebler are a flavorful, crunchy snack cracker. Tastier than a Wheat Thin but not as dry as a Triscuit, Wheatables are a fantastic wheat cracker that is a recommended product.
