Keely Shaye Smith is Critized for Her Size

Beautiful at Any Size, Keely Shaye Smith is Someone to Admire

Donna H. Davey
I've been inspired to write this after reading a post on the celebrity blog TMZ where they posted a photo of Keely Shaye Smith in a bikini and referred to her as having a "whale of a time."

Prior to submitting opinion pieces and prose on Associated Content, I enjoyed blogging. One of my websites had a colorful array of visitors, and I would often receive colorful comments. Some people didn't like me for my opinions so they would try to insult me. I've been compared to a number of people over the years--some good, some not so good. One loyal male visitor of the liberal persuasion pointed out a number of times that I looked like Monica Lewinsky and he wondered if I played like her too. Yes, he was a real winner.

Another man wrote to tell me I reminded him of Keely Shaye Smith--someone I had never even heard of.

Naturally, I did a google search to see who Keely Shaye Smith was. I thought Keely was an attractive woman but I was more impressed with the normalcy of her life and that she managed to have a happy, devoted marriage. During her pregnancies and for a time thereafter she was a voluptuous woman and I can relate to that. I was pleased to see that not only did she appear to not care what people thought of her, but that her husband, Pierce Brosnan, seemed to love her and be attracted to her no matter what size she was. Curvy or slender, Keely was always immaculately dressed and carried herself with beauty and grace. Pierce Brosnan is a gorgeous man (ageless) and could have any "perfect" looking woman on his arm. The fact that he is devoted to Keely and doesn't pressure her to be curveless only makes him more likable.

I'm 35. I'm too old to worry about competing for attention or trying to look good for people who don't matter to me. I will never deprive myself so someone can tell me I look "hot." I don't care to look hot. I don't care to be beautiful, except in the eyes of the man I'm with.

I am a low maintenance woman; my hair is natural, my nails are natural and my curves are natural. I may have an unsightly scar on my abdomen from exploratory surgery, but that scar is a reminder of God giving me a second chance, so the scar should be a reason to give thanks and not a reason to bemoan that I wouldn't look good in a bikini.

I'm just disgusted with appearance related obsession and all the insecurities, insults, competitions and invasive surgeries that go with it. How shallow and vain must we be when we worry about weight fluctuations and wrinkles while someone like Huang Chuncai has to live with massive face tumors that have not only affected his appearance, but must be painful as well. Oh, life is so tough for the rest of us because we have crows feet, thinning hair or can't wear a size 2.

I feel complimented to have been compared to Keely Shaye Smith because she doesn't succumb to the pressures to look perfect in the eyes of a judgmental, image-obsessed society. She's real, and for me, there's no better compliment than that.

Great read! I, too, had read unflattering comments about her, but I found it refreshing too to find someone relatively "normal" looking in Hollywood, who apparently has the courage NOT to be a size 0 :)

Very well said. Being a work out junkie, body image is an obsession for me. I think she looks wonderful and they certainly look happy, but I don't think she looks healthy on the TMZ pic (I think she looks fabulous in that red dress). The world would certainly be a better place if we werent so stuck on looks, however we cant deny that being fat isnt exactly the model of health. Calling her a whale is cruel, but TMZ is a cruel website. Its what's in, didn't you know? Well done.

She appears to be very much like you - it's nice to see a hollywood marriage that will probably last.

I love you for your beliefs and your heart. Don't let anyone ever tell you that there is anything ugly about you. You are my native bride and are incapable of anything ugly.
