The following list is one designed to help your children feel more in control of any potentially dangerous situations they may find themselves in.
Discuss this article and practice it with your kids, don't be shy about approaching the subject as it is one of utmost importance and one that could save their lives. Knowing is strength, and "it won't happen to my kid" weakness. Teach your kids how to be strong and survive!
The list below is an easy one to remember if you can just remember the anagram...."SAFE KID."
S.... Stay with your parent or guardian at all times! No exceptions...no excuses!
A.... Announce if you want to go somewhere...do not wander off! We will listen to you. You should enjoy life too but we want you to be safe as well as happy. If you need to use the restroom, go with an adult, do not go alone! The same goes for gift shops, stores and other attractions. Stay with someone you trust. If you cannot see an adult, you have wandered too far away!
F.... Fear strangers and keep them at arms length! Do not speak with a stranger unless you are with a responsible adult and they let you know it is OK. Do NOT go anywhere with a stranger under any circumstances what so ever !!
E.... Escape! Expect and plan for the worst.... know how to
GET AWAY if the need arises! The movie "Miss Congeniality" with Sandra Bullock had another great anagram "SING" which stands for specific attacks to the abductors body....I'd like to share it now with you.
S-I-N-G ....S...solar plexis, I....instep, N....nose, G....groin. These are easy to remember and work fantastically in the order stated. Practice them with your child! And practice them yourself, you just never know when they might come in handy.
K.... Kick, scream, hit and basically BE A BRAT!!
If someone grabs, touches or tries to abduct you do anything you have to to get the attention of others! Be loud, be obnoxious! Throw the biggest fit of your life! Make someone notice you, so you can get help! This is the one time in your life that it is OK to be as loud and obnoxious as you can be. Take advantage of the situation and BE A BRAT!!!
I.... Insist that the abductor is NOT YOUR PARENT to anyone who will listen and to all within earshot as well! How do you prove this to another adult?
Ask these questions.... Does the abductor know your full name? Your address? Your birthday? Your teacher's name? Where you go to school? Or the name of your pet? Does he or she have a picture of you in his/her wallet? All of these points will prove to police or security that you have been in fact abducted. Law enforcement WILL listen to you so insist that someone call the police. If you make enough fuss, someone will listen!
D.... Defense.... If out in the open, get loose and run! Head for heavily populated areas or if you are close to a mall or store run to the nearest clerk and tell your story. Ask for security to be called and ask to be hidden until they get there. If held in a car, the child should be shown where the wires are underneath the dashboard, and should be taught how to pull them lose!
Ask around, you may be fortunate to find a mechanic that has "totaled cars" and who will volunteer to help your children practice pulling wires (on safe cars of course!) so they will know which ones to pull and how hard they are in fact to dislodge.
Even if your child does not have a car to practice on, they can still learn where the wires are and to PULL any and all they can grab!In this case, "grab and pull" may be all it takes to keep your child safe! Good luck and remember, the time spent teaching your child SAFE KID today may well save their life tomorrow!
