Pick out the tree that you like, preferably a tree that is not pre-cut. If you do get a pre-cut tree make sure that it was cut not long before you get it and it does not show brown needles. If it is pre-cut you should cut a little off the bottom of the trunk. A fresh cut really is the best. It will be harder to get the water up into the tree if it has been cut too long before being put in water.
Now you have your perfect tree you are ready to bring it home and get it set up in a tree stand. Do not add any cold water to the tree. Bring a pot of water just to the boiling point and carefully add the hot water to the tree in the stand. Hot water softens the tree sap that collects at the bottom of the cut tree allowing the water to flow up through the tree and into the branches, cold water hardens the sap and therefore does not allow it to flow up into the tree. Do not add any aspirin or any chemical at all while you have the tree. You will keep it alive with only water. Now keep an eye on the water in the tree stand as it will use more water this way as the whole tree is taking in the water now instead of just keeping the trunk moist. Every time your tree needs water you will need to add hot water, it can be hot tap water after the first fill or you can boil it every time. Never use cold or luke warm water on your Christmas tree.
If you follow these simple and safe instructions every year you have a real Christmas tree it will remain green the whole time you have it set up. If you want to you can keep it up to decorate with Valentine's Day and Easter decorations. It will live that long and should not get any brown needles.
