A rocket drops from the sky, engaging its jets just before it smashes into the ground. The unfortunate soldier who just a moment before stood beneath it is quickly vaporized. A robot leaps from the jet, armed with a shotgun, but before it can do any damage a stray bullet ricochets off the landed jet which then tips forward and crushes the robot. This is Cortex Command.

Developed independently by Data Realms, Cortex Command is a modern yet classy two-dimensional action/strategy game in which 1-4 players compete to collect large amounts of gold buried beneath the earth. At the same time, they must each protect their 'brain-in-a-jar', which is usually secured deep within a bunker. Gameplay is fast-paced and hilarious, as the controls allow for some fancy flying and shooting. There is also a single player mode featuring computer opponents. Players begin a round with a set amount of gold, which they use to purchase soldiers and equipment. Hand-held 'diggers' are used to plunge beneath the earth and collect the shiny stuff - but they also work incredibly well as close-range weapons. For fighting at a distance, there is a wide selection of classic guns like the shotgun, pistol, SMG and AK-47. There is even a 'concrete gun' for building makeshift walls in one's base.

The graphics in Cortex Command are quite impressive. Though it is 2D, sprites are detailed and animated well. The world is composed of destructible pixels, allowing for squishing of players and sculpting of terrain. A ship crash will cause dirt and debris to spray into the air, and a solid shot with a powerful gun will likewise cause a shower of blood. Engines can be blown off of drop-ships resulting in comical crashes. The sounds and music are also very nice. Cortex Command features an original and very impressive soundtrack with several distinct songs. Sounds effects are varied and fitting, and small beeps and blips when navigating menus add an extra touch that, if noticed, is appreciated.

Cortex Command is still a beta product, but very much playable. Releases are regular and always contain significant improvements. If you are a fan of classic, multiplayer action, I would highly recommend giving this game a whirl. Check it out at www.datarealms.com.
