Social Security and the Retirement Budget
Social Security was designed to supplement a retirement plan, not to replace it. When you are checking out your after retirement budget, be sure to check your figures from Social Security. You may be surprised that the Social Security is only about 40 percent of your annual salary. Your other retirement plans should cover the majority of your expenses. Social Security has also not had any cost of living adjustments for the past two years. If the whispers going around Washington are anything to go by, you should not depend on Social Security to sustain the majority of your expenses in your budget. Always have a back-up plan just in case there is a worst-case scenario when you plan your retirement budget.
Investments and the Retirement Budget:
You may have been able to escape unscathed from the last few years of upheaval on Wall Street. If so, congratulations, you are in the minority. If you find your budget is going to be short after retirement, you may want to consider different investment options to help make up the difference.
Retirement Plans and the Retirement Budget
Before you retire, you need to check to see what your employer's retirement plan will actually pay you on a monthly basis. When Eddie took his early retirement option, he was counting on receiving $1,000 per month. However, by the time the deductions, including health insurance were taken from his check, he was left with under $500 per month to live on. There were other negative effects that really hurt Eddie's budget, and you can read about them here.
Before you retire, be sure to have all of your facts straight. Know exactly how much income you will have as well as what expenses so that you can figure out your long-term retirement budget. You want to enjoy your golden years, but planning ahead and using a budget, you can reap the rewards from you years of work.
